Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Privately Printed. First Edition, First Printing. Preface; Illustrated with six Photographic Portraits---of Abraham Lincoln, Boston Corbett, John Wilkes Booth, Edwin Stanton, Jefferson Davis, and the Author; 71 pages. The original deep-blue cloth is in exceptionally fine condition with a minute scratch at top edge and the slightest hint of rubbing to the extremities. [See multiple images of the actual book.] A gilt cartouche enclosing the title names remains brilliant on the front cover, having been protected by the original plain brown wrapper, still present. The high-quality paper of the interior is bright, crisp, and clean. Laid-in is a leaf from the original publication with a description of the book: These four men are so tied up together, by the Civil War history, that the events should be told in one book. It is a four-chapter narrative, fortified in every point by records and evidence never before published. . . . The photograph of President Lincoln, taken in the author's presence on March 6, 1865 by Henry F. Warren, is believed to be the last one taken. [Visible in one of the five images.] Also with the book is a Masonic card, 'Sovereign Grand Commander,' of Melvin M. Johnson---the author's son---himself the author of a book on guns, and designer of the Johnson automatic rifle. As with every book from my father's collection, tipped in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly---domestic sales sent with 'delivery confirmation' tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking. Please note that, due to COVID-19, overseas shipping may incur unusual delays.
