Fine. Condition: Fine. Limited Edition. 4to. Pp. 285. Introduction; a list of sources; index. Endpaper plans of San Francisco, late -19th C. Printed paper-covered boards, with a half-cloth binding affixed with a mounted paper label. One of 1,000 copies printed. The editor has picked a fascinating and effective approach to transporting the reader to the San Francisco of the 1850s, e.g. this sample from September 30, 1850: "At some future period, when the site of San Francisco may be explored by generation ignorant of its history, it will take its place by the side of Herculaneum and Pompeii, and furnish many valuable relics to perplex the prying Antiquarian. Buried beneath the surface, there is already a stratum of artificial productions which the entombed cities of Italy cannot exhibit. Knives, forks, spoons, chisels, files and hardware of every description, gathered from the places of several conflagrations . . ." A lovely copy.

A collection of columns that appeared in the San Francisco Evening Picayune for the period beginning August 5, 1850 and ending April 17, 1852. Anticipating the work of modern journalists, the articles serve as a valuable and detailed record of the personalities, politics, and events of the time. Some minor fading and wear along the extremities of the boards. The dust jacket is a bit edgeworn, with tears to the top third of both folds that have been repaired with tape on the verso; otherwise a very good copy.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. lxviii+455+[lxviii members list] with appendices and index. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to spine and Hudson Bay Coat of Arms to cover in original jacket. Introduction by Richard Glover. Volume XXV. Copy 504 of a limited edition. First edition. The collection is patch at the start. The Company could keep no permanent archives til it had a permanent home in which to keep them. The earliest reports from the Bay were personal letters like the one form 1682 and was written by Governor John Nixon. The first of the regular series to survive in the Company's archives is the Albany letter of 1703. The collection begins to be complete for the main posts in 1723. Their progress and problems were reported by the mother-house which founded them. The annual letter was not the only source of information about its business which the Company received from the Bay. Each post commander was required to keep a fort journal. From these sources and from the country correspondence which was later carried on between posts there emerges a fairly clear picture of Bay-side life and trade. Condition: Near fine in like jacket.

First edition. Limited to 1,000 copies. Quarto. 285pp. 16 plates from early photographs and prints, numerous text illustrations; notes and references, index. Cloth-backed pictorial boards. A very fine copy with lightly chipped pictorial dust jacket. The material in this very interesting work is derived from the rare files of the San Francisco Picayune, probably the enfant terrible of the early San Francisco newspapers. "This handsome volume reproduces the text of one of San Francisco's most important Gold Rush era newspapers beginning with August 5, 1850, and ending with April 17, 1852 . This newspaper superbly documented not only the phenomenal growth of San Francisco but also news from the mines" (Kurutz). [Kurutz: 361].
