Condition: Good. 1924. No Edition Remarks. 240 pages. No dust jacket. Blue cloth with gilt lettering. Black and white photographic plates. Noticeable foxing and tanning to pages and plates. More prominent to text block edges, pastedowns and free endpapers. Pen inscription to front pastedown. Light cracking to gutters but binding remains firm. Boards have minor corner bumping and edgewear with mild staining, tanning and scuffing overall. Spine has similar staining and tanning with soft crushing to ends. Lettering remains bright and clear. Book has a slight forward lean.

Hardcover. Condition: Good + overall. First edition. The authors own story of military life during W.W.I, as prisoner of war and his subsequent escape, with his signed presentation to Richard Coke. Edward Keeling, 1883-1954, was an officer in the Indian Army Reserve during the First World War, during which time he was captured by Ottoman forces and his description of an Anatolian prisoner of war camp is brisk and stark, and there is a postscript in which he denounces British refusal to prosecute those responsible for the mistreatment of prisoners. He escaped, eventually ending up in Bolshevik Russia before serving in Egypt and Kurdistan. His later life was considerably more tranquil, and he died as Member of Parliament for leafy Twickenham. Frontis map and numerous black and white ills. 2 folding coloured maps at rear of book in fine condition. Keeling served in the Mesopotamian Campaign, and was present at the surrender of Kut by the British at the hands of Ottoman forces. Following the surrender, he served as a prisoner of war in Turkey until his escape, which eventually landed him in Bolshevik Russia. Scarce.
