Larson (1870-1957) nennt sich hier auf dem Vorsatz "Herzog der Mongolei", er verbrachte 46 Jahre in diesem Land und verfasste den ersten Reisebericht. Der junge Larson "bewarb sich bei einer amerikanischen Missionsgesellschaft Christian and Missionary Alliance, die in China und der Mongolei arbeitete wohle mehr aus Abenteuerlist denn aus religiöser Begeisterung. 1893 kam er als 23-Jähriger als der erste Missionar dieser Gesellschaft in die Mongolei. Er reiste von Tientsin über Beijing nach Paotao einen großen Teil der über 1000 Kilometer zu Fuß. Im Ordosgebiet lernte er einen Prinzen kennen, der ihm einen Lehrer für die mongolische Sprache vermittelte. Einigermaßen des Mongolischen mächtig zog er dann nach Urga (Heute: Ulanbaatar). Ein Jahr später ließ er sich in Kalgan (Zhangjiakou) an der chinesisch-mongolischen Grenze nieder, wo er die amerikanische Missionarin Mary Rogers 1897 heiratete. Kalgan, etwa 140 km nordwestlich von Peking liegt am Anfang der mongolischen Hochebene und war ein wichtiger Handelsknoten für den Karawanenverkehr westlich nach Sinkiang und nördlich nach Urga und Russland. Viele Europäer, die in der Mongolei zu tun hatten, lernten dort Larson kennen. Für mehrere Jahrzehnte war er einer der wichtigsten Kontaktpersonen, Gewährsmänner und Unterstützer von Personen wie Sven Hedin oder dem späteren US-amerikanischen Präsidenten Herbert Hoover, der damals als Ingenieur eine Eisenbahnlinie zwischen Beijing und der mongolischen Grenze projektierte", wie es auf der Internetseite Munx-Tenger heisst. Aus dem Englischen übertragen von Ruth Andreas-Friedrich (1901-1977), einer Widerstandskämpferin gegen den Nationalsozialismus (Gruppe "Onkel Emil"), die vor allem als Schriftstellerin und Journalistin wirkte.
