Striking illustrated colour frontispiece, accompanied with five additional gorgeous full-page plates attributed to noted American artist Bertha Lum (1869-1954), who would popularize the Japanese and Chinese woodblock prints, and techniques in North America. Lightest wear to the spine ends, gilt lettering has slightly faded, short neat ink inscription to the ffep, text-block without blemish with bright, clean, and unmarked pages and firm, sound binding; very good+. Scarce in commerce. A beautifully illustrated work authored by the first lady-in-waiting and interpreter to Empress Dowager Cixi of the late Qing dynasty.
