hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Acceptable. 4th. Artia, Prague [Published Date: 1956]. Hardcover, 97 pp of text followed by 279 plates. Text in English. 4th Edition. Good in acceptable to poor dust jacket. Oversized brown cloth covered boards have some nicking and scuffing to the edges and quite a bit of fading along edges and spine as well. Binding tight. Moderate overall scuffing, aging, fading and soiling to jacket as well. Now in an archival-quality (removeable) Brodart Cover. NOT Ex-Library. NO remainder marks. Contents include: Preface to the 4th edition; Gothic Painting in Bohemia [Essay by Matejcek]; Bibliography; Catalogue; List of Plates; Reproductions [From Preface to 4th Edition] This new edition, the third foreign language edition, of the book on Czech Gothic painting is appearing exactly five years after the last English and French edition. Alas, it is also five years since the premature death of the main author of this work. Professor Antomn Matejcek, whom we still mourn. A. Matejcek prepared the edition of 1950 for publication but only survived it by a few months, not waiting to learn of the acclaim our joint work received in the art world. The late research worker, professor of the history of art at Charles University, Prague, belonged to the founders of modern Czech artistichistorical science and to the creators of the history of Czech medieval art to which he devoted a large part of his life. His scientific contribution to a knowledge and explanation of Czech Gothic painting was as great as were his services in making this period of Czech art recognized and understood abroad. "Czech Gothic Painting" formed the peak and climax of his scientific and popularizing activities and at the same time is, and probably will be for a long time, the latest word in research work in this field of the history of art. The importance of Matejcek's book chiefly Ues in the fact that, contrary to foreign research workers who considered Czech painting of this period as a mere part of the development of Central European art and one of the German schools, he clearly showed its independence and emphasised the specifically national character of the Czech Gothic school of painting which is acclaimed by our people today as a great heritage of their cultural past.
