Condition: Gut. 1. Auflage. Cloth, 8vo, 26 cm, 293 pp, 16 plates. From the blurb - "Accounts of the working of the Stock Exchange have been published at intervals from the end of the 17th century, but no comprehensive history of the Exchange has hitherto been written. This book has been prepared with the full cooperation of the Council of the Stock Exchange, who have given the authors access to all their minutes and other records. It starts with the formation of the earliest joint-stock companies and the beginning of the National Debt, and traces the growth of a market in the coffee houses of 'Change Alley, and the foundation of the present Stock Exchange in Capel Court. There are chapters on the 19th-century Consols market, the growth of London as a centre for the issue of foreign loans, railway finance, and the growth of limited liability companies in domestic trade and industry. The evolution of methods of issue and dealing is described and there are accounts of the origins of some of the oldest surviving firms, and of changes in manners and customs of the Exchange. In more modern times there are chapters on the development of the institutional investor; on the changes in the National Debt brought about by war and nationalisation ; and on the growth of business in ordinary shares. A chapter on booms and slumps analyses the main causes of fluctuations in prices. Finally there is a description of the working of the Exchange today, and a discussion of future possibilities." Good in chipped and slightly duststained dustwrapper.
