A narrative of personal observation of the lives and customs of the Djuka (Ndyuka) people of Surinam, based on the expeditions of Dr. Morton Kahn, which he made iin 1927, 1928 and 1930. The Djuka, descendants of escaped West African slaves, had preserved preserved what was described as a replica of 18th century society in West Africa. Includes bibliography and index. The author, Morton Charles Kahn, Sr. (1895-1959), was an explorer, bacteriologist and public health specialist. He served on the faculty of the Cornell University Medical College between 1919 and 1955, followed by four years as the chief bacteriologist at St. Vincent's Hospital, New York City.
