The uncommon second edition, the first edition published under this title. Rebound in quarter morocco with gilt detail to the spine. Wth engravings by Le Keux, Woolnoth, Byrth and Scott, from drawings by John Preston Neale. Including a beautiful frontispiece, and sixty full-page plates. Collated complete. John Preston Neale was an English architectural and landscape draughtsman, whose work features in numerous architectural works from the nineteenth century. No author is stated on the title page although the work is commonly credited to the English historian and topographer, Edward Wedlake Brayley. A detailed work on the history and antiquities of Westminster Abbey and Henry the Seventh's Chapel in London. With information on their tombs, ancient monuments and inscriptions. Alongside memoirs of the abbots and deans, from the earliest period to the present time. With an ink gift inscription to the reverse of the front free endpaper, for one, 'Sidney M. Luennell, Secretary of Westminster Hospital', from The House Committee of the Hospital, dated 1886. Rebound in quarter morocco. Externally, smart with some shelf wear to the edges. Rubbing to the spine. Fading to the spine. Discoloration marks to the lower boards. The odd light mark to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Ink gift inscription to the reverse of the front free endpaper. Internally, binding strained. Two plates on page 24 are loose, and the plate on page 111 is loosening and could become detached upon further handling. Pages lightly age-toned to the edges but otherwise bright and clean with just the odd handling mark. Offsetting and some scattered spots to the frontispiece and to the title page. The odd spot and light offsetting to the plates. Very Good. book.

With Historical and Architectural Descriptions. Vol I (II). London: Published for the Proprietors; by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green, Paternoster-Row; and G. and W.B. Whittaker, Ave-Maria Lane. 1824 (1825) No pagination. Each text section individually numbered. The volumes collate as follows: Vol I: Engraved frontispiece, (vi), (106) p., 53 engraved plates Vol II: Engraved frontispiece, (2), (98) p., 43 engraved plates. The volumes measure 24 x 15 x 2 cm. Each Leaf measures 233 x 144 mm. Preface with a date of 1826. Bound in contemporary half black Moroccan with marbled boards. The flat spine with five elaborate gilt bands forming six compartments, with gilt lettering applied directly to the second compartment and Volume Numbers in the fourth compartment. The two volumes in a near fine condition externally except for some wear to the marble paper. Marble paper endpapers, marbled edges. Internally the endpapers have cracked but everything holding fine. The plates are clean examples with minor foxing. Some transfer onto the letterpress when the tissue guards not present.

Modern Cloth Binding. Condition: Fair/Good. No Jacket. Neale, John Preston, and Le Keux, Woolnoth, Byrne, Scott. (illustrator). 1st. A complete copy of this very scarce publication. 112 text pages, and 61 plates - all present and firmly bound. The plates, unfortunately, all suffer from water-staining, which does not affect the text pages. The extent of the staining ranges from half the page to less than one quarter in one corner. The paper has not been damaged by this wetting, and the plates are clearly visible and not unduly affected visually. Photographs of the damage can be provided on request. Please note that this book weighs over 1 kg., which is the ABEBooks assumed default weight, so postage at cost will be greater than that quoted.
