Book First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. From the library of legendary Austrian School economist Ludwig von Mises (1881-1973), author of "Socialism" (1922), "Bureaucracy" (1944) and "Human Action" (1949.) ("Socialism" still stands as the most thorough and devastating demolition of socialism ever written. Mises?s "Socialism" converted many prominent economists and social philosophers away from socialism, including Hayek, the German Wilhelm Ropke, and the Englishman Lionel Robbins, though of course the inflationary scourge of borrow-and-spend Keynesianism continues to prove more attractive to many cynical politicians, even today.) Dated 2/25/70 and signed in blue ink to blank FFE: "To Dr. Mises - / This book is a small token of my indebtedness. / Edmund A Opitz." Price-clipped "good-plus" jacket has some fraying to head of spine. SSN listed to copyright page as 87000-079-9; we have added a preliminary zero (not found in book) to get the ABE computer to accept this as a valid (post-1970) ISBN. "Both Christianity and Judaism thrive best in a free economy," maintains Mr. Opitz. "For governments that enslave man economically inevitably end up shackling him religiously." Author Opitz was a Congregationalist minister on the staff of the Foundation for Economic Education, Irvington-on-Hudson, New York -- where von Mises himself was a part-time staff member. During the latter part of World War II Opitz served as Field Director of the American Red Cross. Von Mises retired from his 24-year post as a Visiting Professor at New York University at the age of 87 in 1969 -- though the university had never paid him a salary, his work being supported by the conservative/libertarian William Volker Fund until 1962, and thereafter by donations from libertarian commentator Lawrence Fertig and other American businessmen. Von Mises' will bequeathed his personal library to Hillsdale College; we're not sure how this copy escaped. 318 pp. including index, here reduced from $1,325. Inscribed by Author(s).
