Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Later Printing. In the era before television, computers, and cell phones, Crowther's book promises its readers "What Letters to write for every purpose, business and social" and delivers. For readers today, it provides a glimpse of the morals and manners of a more sedately-paced time but one with less stress and anxiety as well. Some of the advice seems humorous to today's readers: "Do not use simplified spelling, if for no other reason than that it detracts from the reader's absorption of the contents of the letter itself." Texters should be concerned, assuming their messages have any content). Good sense then often remains good sense now ("Never write a letter in the heat of anger. Sleep on it if you do and the next morning will not see you so anxious to send." Many of the bloggers in our litigious 21st century society are still learning this the hard way.). Black cloth-covered boards, with title and author in gold lettering on the front and spine, show some minimal wear at spine ends; top edge of text somewhat soiled; inside front cover and front pastedown ink-stamped with previous owner's name, o/w text is clean and unmarked, tight and square. A nice copy for someone studying the history of manners and morals or for someone who appreciates a piece of Americana and just likes to remember "the way things used to be.".

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Mary Jane Owens Crowther (1882-1972) is best remembered for this book, The Book of Letters (1923). It not only lays out the canonical forms to be followed, she presents practical advice on how to structure correspondence to achieve desired response. Examples: ?Legalistic quibbles have no place in the answer to a complaint. The customer is rightly or wrongly dissatisfied; business is built only on satisfied customers. Therefore the question is not to prove who is right but to satisfy the customer. This doctrine has its limitations, but it is safer to err in the way of doing too much than in doing too little.? ?It is a rare writer who can say all that need be said in one line and not seem rude. But it can be done.? ?The letter is a substitute for a spoken conversation. It is spontaneous, private, and personal. It is non-literary and is not written for the eyes of the general public.? These guidelines even work in the era of texting and e-mails. xiii + 272pp. Hardcover has navy cloth boards with gold lettering on front and spine. Sun fading to and tear along rear edge in spine. Numerous letters, news clippings and articles laid in, so front gutter torn but repaired with tape. No DJ. Sticker from Gimbel Book Store, Philadelphia pasted to rear paste-down. Interior is complete, clean and unmarked. Always privately owned, likely 1st edition. Copyright 1922. Printed in U.S.A. This copy printed in 1923, year of publication from other sources, according to title page. No explicit edition or printing info found, 1st edition assumed. No ISBN, LCCN nor MSR.
