Unbound. Condition: Near Fine. Double LP. Two albums in glassine sleeves and a printed cardboard sleeve stamped "Parch, Yellow Springs Ohio" on the verso. Sleeve with light wear including a tiny split at the flap fold and a bit of toning at the edges and glassine sleeves a bit creased; the records are untested but appear fine save for one tiny shallow nick on Side 1. Inscribed on the flap to longtime friends from whom Partch rented a cabin in Santa Rosa, California: "With love to Bud and all the Zollers, both Palpable and Crypto. Harry - August 16, 1957." Partch was one of the first composers in the 20th Century to work extensively with microtonal scales, writing much of his music for instruments he made himself. (He is playing one such instrument on the cover.) *The Bewitched* is "one of the longest continuous works of music and perhaps the most successful realization of his ideas about ritual theater, which he hoped in vain to make obsolete the 'music drama' of Richard Wagner, to be be produced and recorded during Partch's own lifetime. Indeed, *The Bewitched* has a almost Wagnerian scale, but is wildly different in just about every other way. To what extent can be gauged by mentally visualizing one of Partch's characteristic scene settings: 'Visions Fill the Eyes of a Defeated Basketball Team in the Shower Room'" (John Garvey, AllMusic).
