Volume II includes selections from the principle historical works of those writers who molded the art and science of history from the Renaissance through the Enlightenment. Volume III includes the principal historical works of those 19th-century writers who took the 18th-century idea of history as a science and molded it into a craft where a passion for truth came first, while the final volume is comprised of selections from the principal historical works of 20th-century writers, and focuses on the concerns of our own era: the possibilites of cultural history, attention to the weight of power, the connection of calss with politics.
