hardcover, 6" x 8½", (no jacket issued?) 284 pages Land purchased just outside the walls of London during the 'Black Death' was consecrated and utilised for the burial of the dead. Later, a Carthusian monastery was founded on these fields, and despite the efforts of Henry VIII and Cromwell, remained there for 160 years. After the expulsion of the monks, it became a palace for Tudor nobles for generations (Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk, lived there; his descendants stayed until 1611). Thomas Sutton, successful merchant, built a hospital (King James) and free school (Charterhouse) there - Charterhouse public school has since re-located to Surrey. This book records the entire history in detail. Thirty-eight illustrations (mostly photographs, some plans). As packed book weighs 1¼kgs (3lbs), slightly-higher-than-usual shipping costs may apply. Travelling library sticker inside front cover and rear cover. Frontispiece illustration (Thomas Sutton) under tissue; title-page in two colours. Hinges partly exposed. Book in GOOD condition.
