Book First Edition Signed
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Here is an utterly remarkable offering, deserving of hyperbole. Seven of the eleven featured artists have flat-signed the book beside their photographs (see my photos). The book was produced by The Octagon Center for the Arts in conjunction with an exhibition held March 22 to April 29, 1984 and toured between September 1984-December 1985. It begins with an introduction by the curator Martha Benson and essays by Cleota Reed ("Tried by Fire: Women Pioneers of the Art Pottery Movement in America") and Susan Peterson ("Living Legends: Lucy Lewis and Santana Martinez"). That is followed by 'six over sixty: each of the six artists has one page with a black-and-white photograph, one page of a biographical sketch and two pages with large photographs of their work (one in black-and-white and one in color). 'the continuum' (under sixty) follow with one page with a photograph and biographical sketch and one page with a large black-and-white photograph of their work. The last page is titled Footnotes. The 'six over sixty' are Laura Andreson, Ruth Duckworth, Vivika Heino (of Otto and Vivika Heino fame), Lucy M. Lewis, Santana Martinez, and Beatrice Wood. The 'continuum': Christina Bertoni, Jamie Fine, Karen Karnes, Sally Bowen Prange, and Elsa Rady. The artists who signed the book are Ruth Duckworth, Vivika Heino, Lucy M. Lewis, Santana Martinez (And, making it 8 her sculptor husband Adam Martinez), Christina Bertoni, Jamie Fine, and Sally Bowen Prange. The book is 48 pages long. I've rated it Very Good. It is very solidly bound. It does have instances of minor wear. On the front cover, as you may be able to see, there is a small light tan stain adjacent to the middle edge. There are also a few places where you can see a little bit of bluish coloring. The all white rear cover has a little bit of handling soiling, nothing significant. I didn't see any tears on the covers or pages. The one imperfection with regard to the pages is a little puffiness at the top corner, probably the result of either a bump or something pressing against that part of the book. It affects only an inch or so of the top corner and doesn't reach the text or the photographs or the signatures. In other words it's rather minor. Beside the artist's signatures no one has written their name or anything else in the book. And there aren't any markings or attachments. Just how rare is this book? There isn't another copy anywhere on the Internet that is signed by even one of the featured artists. Signed by Author(s).
