Seller: BLACK SWAN BOOKS, INC., ABAA, ILAB, Richmond, VA, U.S.A.
Condition: Good binding. The Virginia Evangelical and Literary Magazine was issued for about 10 years, beginning in January 1818 and concluding with a final issue in December 1828. John Holt Rice edited it, with the assistance of Moses Hoge, John D. Blair, and George Baxter. Many, if not most, articles were submitted anonymously or under pseudonyms -- Timothius, Acadmemicus, and the like. ~~The 10 issues are Volume II, No. 1, January 1819; No 2, February 1819 [Note this issue has corner loss to a number of leaves affecting a few letters of type--the seems almost certainly the result of a mouse looking for a meal]; No. 4, April 1819 [Note one leaf has a 3" closed tear]; No. 5, May 1819, contains images of the Idols of Pomare; No. 6, June 1819; No. 7, July 1816 contains "Thoughts on Slavery": "All immediate emancipation is out of the question, and perhaps domestic emancipation will always be impracticable", though the magazine appears to favor the rightness of teaching slaves to read and write [Note some loss to top corner of a number lof leaves not affecting text]; No. 8, August 1819 contains "Origins of Presbyterianism~ in Virginia", also Ecclesiastical Statistics reported to the church's Assembly; No. 9, September 1819; No. 10, October 1819 in which the Memoirs of Samuel Davies, which have been features in a number of the previous issues, is continued: The popularity of Davies in Virginia is almost unbounded"; No. 11, November 1819; Volume III, No. 1, 1820, contains a lengthy review of the Memoirs of Henry Obookiah, a native of Owhyhee, and introduced Horae Biblicae, in which the magazine begins addressing various scriptural issues.~~Bound in sheep with the boards separating but still attached. Lacking the morocco title label; the number label (Volume II) is laid in. With the attractive contemporary name label for Cyrus Johnston on the pastedown. An early Richmond magazine imprint, and rather uncommon. ~~. Good binding.
