A classic of polar exploration and human endurance. From the book: You're lost now, I told myself. I was appalled. I realized that I should have to lengthen my radius from the beacon; and in lengthening it I might never be able to find the way back to the one certainty. However, there was no alternative unless I preferred to freeze to death, and I could do that just as thoroughly 1,000 yards from the hut as 500. So now I decided to take 30 steps more in the same direction, after scraping a little heap of snow together to mark the 100-pace point. On the 29th step, I picked up the first of the bamboo sticks, not more than 30 feet away. No shipwrecked mariner, sighting a distant sail, could have been more overjoyed. How's that for the real stuff? True adventure of this stripe would put to shame every one of today's fools wasting their lives playing video games and lying to themselves about the merit and the meaning of their exploits -- if they even knew who Byrd was. Or had a sense of shame to begin with. Digital bravura and cyber-manhood disappears instantly when the power goes out; the real thing stands the test of time.
