First Edition
Chicago: Herbert S. Stone, 1902. First edition. Original orange cloth, stamped in green, laid paper, top edge gilt, others uncut, title in red and black. Dedicated "to her for whom it was written in vain", this narrates "a tragedy of the suburbs" (p.196) and "the lot of every woman" (p.199). The heroine, stuck with a successful but commonplace husband, bemoans a boring life in suburban New York. Risley (b.1874) wrote for "The Yellow Book" and other journals, and published 2 or 3 books of fiction. The present novel was praised for its style, but criticized in "The Reader" for its "completely untypical" characterization of the heroine, who was not "a mature, typical thoroughly womanly woman" (J. Stewart Doubleday, v.1, 1902), while the "The Era" asserts that "the story, like its heroine, is morbid, yet it is a good sketch of a not uncommon feminine type." (Anonymous, v.10, 1902). Very light damp-stain to the fore-corner of the cloth on the front and back, else Fine.
