Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. London: Printed by W. Oliver, Volume III Part I 1778, ONLY. First Edition. 403pp, the volumes are major works of eighteenth century philosophy and theology, anticipating utilitarianism and holding that every man's satisfaction is the ultimate end of any action. Contains the bookplate of one John Ashley Warre to the pastedown. Abraham Tucker (2 September 1705 20 November 1774) was an English country gentleman, who devoted himself to the study of philosophy. He wrote The Light of Nature Pursued (1768 1777) under the name of Edward Search. Tucker was born in London of a Somerset family, the son of a wealthy city merchant. His parents died during his infancy, and he was brought up by his uncle, Sir Isaac Tillard. In 1721, he entered Merton College, Oxford, as a gentleman commoner, and studied philosophy, mathematics, French, Italian and music. He afterwards studied laws at the Inner Temple, but was never called to the bar. In 1727 he bought Betchworth Castle, near Dorking, where he passed the remainder of his life. In 1736 Tucker married Dorothy Barker, daughter of Edward Barker of East Betchworth, cursitor baron of the exchequer. They had two daughters, Judith (died 1794) who did not marry, and Dorothea Maria, who married in 1763 Sir Henry St John, 2nd Baronet of Dogmersfield Park. On his wife's death in 1754, Tucker occupied himself in collecting together all the letters that had passed between them, which, we are told, he transcribed twice over under the title of "The Picture of Artless Love." He then concentrated on his major work, The Light of Nature Pursued, of which in 1763 he published a specimen under the title of Free Will, Foreknowledge, and Fate, by "Edward Search". The strictures of a critic in the Monthly Review of July 1763 drew from him a pamphlet called Man in Quest of Himself, by "Cuthbert Comment" (reprinted in Samuel Parr's Metaphysical Tracts, 1837), "a defence of the individuality of the human mind or self." In 1768 the first two volumes of his work were published. The remaining volume appeared posthumously. His eyesight failed him completely in 1771, but he contrived an apparatus which enabled him to write legibly enough that the result could be transcribed by his daughter. The final volume was ready for publication when he died. Tucker took no part in politics, and wrote a pamphlet, The Country Gentleman's Advice to his Son on the Subject of Party Clubs (1755), cautioning young men against its snares. FIRST EDITION. ii, 148pp. 8vo. Sl. affected by damp. Later half maroon calf, marbled boards, spine gilt in compartments; a little rubbed. Alston VI 490. ESTC T150278. BL, Glasgow & Oxford only in the UK; Harvard and NYPL only in U.S. Abraham Tucker, 1705-1774, was a philosopher, best known for The Light of Nature Pursued. This, his last book, was privately printed and is a plea for English to be written as it is spoken, providing fascinating insights to contemporary pronunciation, and occasionally verging on being a manifesto. Tucker went blind in 1771, and invented a machine to help himself write. His decision to write a book explicitly pairing letters with vocal sounds must surely be related to this event.

First Edition
First edition of the prelude to Tucker's nine-volume magnum opus, The Light of Nature Pursued, which outlined a vast and idiosyncratic philosophical system, and which had a noted influence on his philosophical contemporaries. Tucker was an empiricist in the tradition of John Locke, holding that the mind begins as a blank slate. In his moral philosophy he proposed that our own satisfaction is the motive of our actions, and that the maximum satisfaction of this is the ultimate moral good. He can consequently be seen as an early precursor of utilitarianism. This work, published pseudonymously, was not well received by the critics. "The 1763 fragment was strongly criticized in the Monthly Review, to which Tucker provided a humorous reply, Man in Quest of Himself, under the new pseudonym Cuthbert Comment" (ODNB). The Light of Nature Pursued, however, enjoyed a high reputation from its first appearance, and was a noted influence on William Paley, Thomas Malthus, and James MacIntosh. ESTC T117455. Octavo (198 x 124 mm). Contemporary calf, double gilt fillet to bands and covers. Contemporary ownership inscription of James Drummond of Bridgend in ink to front free endpaper and in pencil to front pastedown; 18th-century note of author and their death date on title. Minor restoration at head of rear joint, short closed tear at fore edge of title neatly taped on verso, light finger soiling, ink splash to p. 153. A good copy.

Leather. Condition: Fair. None (illustrator). A set of five very scarce volumes by Abraham Tucker, under the pen name of Edward Search, in leather binding. Very important texts and all contemporary editions are extremely rare. As these were published separately they are usually seen individually and a five volume collection is highly unusal. The original work was seven volumes broken in to parts. Not special externally and would really benefit from the attentions of a good binder but we keep them here are entirely original. Bound and marked as an eight volume set, this collection comprises Volumes III (Volume II Part I- 1768), Volume V (Volume II part III-1768) Volume VI (Volume III Part I- 1778), Volume VI (IV Part II- 1777) and Volume VIII (Volume V Part III- 1777) The volumes are major works of eighteenth century philosophy and theology, anticipating utilitarianism and holding that "every man's satisfaction" is the ultimate end of any action. Contains the bookplate of one George Phillips to the pastedown of volume III. In calf binding with gilt detailing. Externally, there is wear to the boards, joints, extremities and backstrips, with tenderness to hinges. The front board is detached but present to the sixth volume and missing to the eighth. Internally, the pages are firmly bound but are somewhat spotted and age-toned, with some creasing. Overall: FAIR due to binding though internally presentable. Fair. book.
