Exhaustive in coverage, the work treats in detail many little-known companies and actors, and there is a great deal of material on the surprisingly vibrant American theater of the revolutionary period. It is the standard study of the pre-Revolutionary drama in America. Contents: v. 1. Before the Revolution [1749-1774]; v. 2. During the Revolution and after [1774-1792]; v. 3. New foundations [1792-1797].

Gilt Lettered Cloth. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. The original three volume set published between 1888 and 1891, and still respected as an exhaustive study of the American theatre between 1749 and 1797, with individual histories of each theatre, their performances, casts, etc. A fourth volume was planned, but never finished, and a majority of the edition of the third volume was destroyed by fire before distribution to subscribers was completed - perhaps accounting for the distressed condition of the spine of Volume Three in this set. Otherwise - solid and clean. EXTRA POSTAGE.
