Book
Soft cover. Condition: Good. In Hebrew. (1), pages 139-141. Reprint from book 7 of Yediot hamakhon lekheker hashira haIvrit Yerushalayim. 230 x 165 mm. Very good condition but top corner of covers are alomst broken off. An eminent Jewish scholar examines the total body of texts, legends, and traditions referring to the Binding of Isaac, and provides the paradigm for showing how legend and history interact, how the past may be made comprehensible by present events, and the present may be understood as a renewal of revelation. Born in Romania and educated in Vienna, Spiegel (1899-1984) was for a number of years a leader of Jewish youth who were preparing to live in collectives in Israel as members of Ha-Shomer ha-Za'ir. He taught in Erez Israel 1923 29, then moved to New York, was professor of medieval Hebrew literature at the Jewish Theological Seminary. He published studies on Hosea, Amos, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Job. These exhibit both his erudition and thoroughness and also his style. In 1996 the Jewish Theological Seminary established the Shalom Spiegel Institute for Medieval Hebrew Literature. The Institute provides fellowships to graduate students in the field, fosters international research projects, and provides access to Spiegel's copious collection of research materials.
