Size: 8.5 X 5.75 X 1.5. This is a historical novel based on The War of Jenkin's Ear (1739-1748), the American version of Europe's War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748), just as the French and Indian War is the American version of the European Seven Years War. In the American theatre, the war was fought primarily in the Caribbean and the southern colonies of North America. There British assaults on strong points like Cartagena in Colombia and Havana were unsuccessful, and except for a few actions in Florida and Georgia most later action took place in Europe. The name Jenkin's Ear refers to Capt. Robert Jenkins of the Brig Rebecca whose ear was sliced off during a contretemps wth a Spanish boarding party. This tale uses the conceipt of the Shepards having run across a tale attributed to Horace Walpole, the author of the Gothic novel The Castle of Otranto, and a Whig politician. He was the son of long time Prime Minister Robert Walpole. Book.
