Hardcover. 1st edition. 144 p.; 10 halftone pl., 15 line cuts in text; 22 cm. Signature of Henry C. McCook on front flyleaf. `Old Tennent has been connected with several different Presbyteries, some of which have been famous in the history of the Presbyterian church in America. Obviously Old Tennent was first connected with the Philadelphia Presbyter, and appears to have been the first of all the churches of New Jersey that was connected with this mother of American Presbyteries. The first extant record of the meeting of this Presbytery shows it assembled at the Old Scots church, for the ordination of Mr. John Boyd. The Synod of Philadelphia was formed in 1716. The Synod established the Presbytery of East Jersey in 1733, by dividing the Presbytery of Philadelphia. Then in 1738 the Synod of Philadelphia formed the Presbytery of New York by uniting the remnants of the Presbytery of Long Island with the Presbytery of East Jersey. Two days later, on May 26, 1738, at the same session, the Synod erected the Presbytery of New Brunswick, and included Old Tennent within its bounds. Of the Presbytery of New Brunswick Rev. William Tennent, Jr., was one of the five original members that came from the Presbytery of New York. After 121 years in this connection Old Tennent made another change. The Synod of New Jersey in Oct., 1859, erected the Presbytery of Monmouth, and naemd [sic] Tennent as one of its churches. During the discussions and difficulties in the Presbyterien Church throughout the country in the years 1837 and 1838.nothing in the records to show that Rev. James Clark .did for himself or for his congregation manifest any other desire than to support the principles of the Old School Branch of the Church.' (76-78) Fair x-l black binder's cloth. Edges much chipped, not aff. text.
