Boards crisp clean with tiny bit of wear to top of spine on two volumes. All boards tight with unsplit end papers. Each volume has a bookplate from Lady Fetherston and one from the library. Volume 1 has some more markings but not on the title page. Contents of all volumes unmarked tight and have no foxing. Lots of engraved plates all in nice condition. Will require some extra postage.

Hudson Turner's untimely death the second volume and subsequent volumes were completed by the editor of The Glossary of Architecture, John Henry Parker. From the library of Doctor Malcolm Higgs, an important architectural historian who worked as an assistant architect to Stirling & Gowan, working on their particularly renowned Leicester University Engineering Laboratory. During his long career he taught at the University of Edinburgh School of Architecture, Canterbury School of Architecture, and University of Nottingham. Later in his life he was the Vice-President and Honorary Librarian of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and contributed and edited the "Journal of Architecture". All four volumes are in the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart with bumping to the head and tail of the spine, marks to the spine of vol. i, split to the tail of the spine of vol. iii part i. Previous owner bookplates to the front pastedowns and rear pastedowns for John Thompson. Previous owner pencil inscriptions to the rear endpaper of vols i, ii and iii part ii. Front hinge is starting to vols i,ii and iii part i but remain firm. Previous owner pen inscription tot he page after the front free endpaper of vol i. The recognised mid-19th century text book on English mediaeval domestic architecture, with descriptions of most major secular buildings of the period, careful woodcut illustrations by Orlando Jewitt, and citations from mediaeval records and literary sources. The first volume was published with the name of T.Hudson Turner, a former Public Record Office employee, as its author, but Turner died in 1852, and the remaining volumes were the work of the indefatigable John Henry Parker, who had in fact already been responsible for the descriptions of buildings and other strictly architectural matter in Turner's volume. 8vo. 3 vols bound in 4, as issued. (12) + xxxii + 287 + (1)pp ; v + (11) + 352pp ; viii + (8) + 200pp ; (12) + pp 201-491 + (1)pp, (4)pp publisher?s adverts ; each with many woodcut plates and some woodcut text ills. Turner died at the age of only 37 after the publication of the first volume, and the work was completed by his publisher, Parker. Excellent survey, very nicely illustrated.
