The Early days in Madison County, Alabama, which includes the City of Huntsville, are explored in this New 64 page 11"x 8 1/2"spiral-bound booklet, compiled from three early writings. The tri-color front cover is printed on 80# card stock and protected with a vinyl sheet. Alabama Her History, Resources, War Record and Public Men 1540 to 1872 by Willis Brewer, was first printed in 1872. The excerpt in the booklet concerns the Madison County portion of Brewer's book. It gives statistical data of the county, a brief history of Huntsville, and names of legislators. It also includes biographies of prominent citizens, including: Gabriel Moore, William I. Adair, William Kelly, Henry Chambers, James G. Birney, John M. Taylor, Byrd Brandon, David Moore, John Williams Walker, Leroy Pope Walker, Richard Wilde Walker, Clement Comer Clay, Clement Claiborne Clay, James White McClung, William Smith, Silas Parsons, Thomas Fearn, Reuben Chapman, Jeremiah Clemens, William Acklen, William Fleming, George W. Lane, Septimus D. Cabaniss, Nicholas Davis, Robert Coman Brickell, Egbert J. Jones, Edward Dorr Tracy, David P. Lewis, Jarez Leftwich, Smith D. Hale, John Hunt Morgan, Henry C. Lay, Julia Pleasants Cresswell, James Phelan, Peter M. Dox, William Manning Lowe. The second excerpt is from A History of Madison County and Incidentally of North Alabama 1732 - 1840 by Judge Thomas Jones Taylor. Hill (of Montgomery, Alabama) and noted by her under the title "By WBrewer / Alabama." Laid in is a 3-page autograph letters, signed by the author 30 July 1891, on his law firm stationery, declining to sell his copy of Adair's "History of then American Indians" and joking about other bookish matters. Brewer (1844-1912), a native and lifelong resident of Alabama, served in the Confederate army, in post-war local and state political offices, and the U.S. House of Representatives, 1897-1901; Dr. Luther L. Hill (1862-1946) was "the first American physician to perform a successful surgical repair on a wounded heart" (Encyclopedia Alabama, online). Wright III, 665: "Brewer, supposed author."
