Unbound. Condition: Near Fine. Small engraving. 9" x 11 3/4". Light foxing and discoloration along the edges, near fine. Worlidge was a painter and etcher. His major reputation was made by miniature portraits and in middle life his most popular work consisted of heads in black lead pencil for which he was commissioned by numerous leaders of fashionable society. Worlidge also led an interesting personal life. He married three times, supposedly fathering thirty-two children. In his later life, he was frequently drunk once going on a three day binge, was reckless with money, and stricken with gout.

No Binding. Condition: Very Good. Rembrandt; Thomas Worlidge (illustrator). Printed On wove paper signed TW and dated 1758 in plate to lower right corner, with the number 4 also etched in top left corner. The sheet is adhered to a large sheet with glue at both right corners of the sheet, the left corners had been adhered with glue but not now causing slight loss of paper on verso where the glue was. The sheet has very light creases and small margins, but generally in very good condition. Etching, 275 x 390mm (10¾ x 15½ inches) Sheet size 283 x 400mm (11 x 15.5 inches) Thomas Worlidge's (1700-66) copy of Rembrandt's famous 'hundred guilder print', depicting Christ healing the sick and debating with the Pharisees. Its sobriquet originated with a story that Rembrandt himself had to pay this (then exorbitant) price to buy back an impression. Since Rembrandt etched his plate in 1648 it was celebrated as his most complex and ambitious print, and its masterful lighting compared with his 'Night Watch'. Its lasting influence in England is demonstrated by both Worlidge's attempt to take up the challenge of emulating Rembrandt, and by Captain William Baillie's notorious reissuing of the (heavily-worked) original plate. Posthumous impression: after Worlidge's death, his prints were republished by his widow with numbers added in the plate corners to correspond with her 1767 sale catalogue of Worlidge prints. The 'English Rembrandt', Worlidge (1700-66) was a pupil of Alessandro Maria Grimaldi, whose daughter Arabella he married. State iii/iii; W4; D54.

A fine series of etchings of antique gems by Thomas Worlidge (1700-1766), the renowned portraitist who turned his attention to etching later in life. The bibliographical details of this edition are unclear. It was originally printed in octavo without letterpress in 1768, with this quarto edition appearing sometime after 1780. Sinkankas calls for numbered plates, though in this copy the plates are not numbered. Sinkankas 7333, cf 7331 Near contemporary morocco rebacked with the original spine laid down. 4to, 233 x 169 mms., pp. [xiv, including ten pages "List of Subscribers"], 48 [49 - 56 "Liste des Souscrivans"], 48 [i. e., with the list of subscribers and the Preface both in English and French], 174 engraved plates, mostly of classical authors, rulers, famous people, etc., with an occasional animal, plate are measuring 82 x 64 mms., and, curiously, a double leaf of "Catalogue of Mr Worlidge's Prints." i. e., a price list of Worlidge's engravings but which doesn't seem to relate to the engravings in the book. attractively bound (perhaps by Staggemeier and Welcher) in full red morocco, with large gilt roll binder to an acorn motif, central gilt lozenge on each cover enclosing an ornamental figure in gilt, spine gilt in compartments to the same figure, olive morocco label, all edges gilt, marbled end-papers; spine darkened and faded, corners worn, but a good to very good copy, with the "Astle Library" rectangular stamp on the verso of the front free end-paper. The provenance is interesting: Thomas Astle (1735 - 1803) collected books and manuscripts on a large scale, and inherited the library of his father-in-law, the Rev. Philip Morant. The library was dispersed in sales in the 1960s and 1970s. The listings in library databases for this work report that it was published in two folio volumes, but this is clearly a quarto and complete. My guess is that this is the work published as A Select Collection of Drawings from Curious Antique Gems; Most of them in the Possession of the Nobility and Gentry of this Kingdom; Etched after the Manner of Rembrandt. By T. Worlidge, Painter, first in 1768, but in the present volume, the half-title and title-page are in French, as are the Preface and List of Subscribers. Among the subscribers, surrounded by other Scottish names, is "Mr Hume," though I seriously doubt that this is the David Hume. William Kenrick was also a subscriber, and so was the physician William Hunter, who used engravings by Worlidge of a foetus in his Anatomia uteri humani gravidi tabulis illustrata (1774).
