Book Description: Zuppke and Bearg, Publishers, Urbana, Ill., 1922. Full-bound Light Blue Cloth. Book Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Diagrams not Credited (illustrator). "First Edition" Stated. 6X9 Inches. Robert Zuppke was the legendary football coach of the University of Illinois from 1912 to 1941, credited with inventing the flea-flicker pass and even the huddle (though the claim of Gaulladet University quarterback Paul Hubbard to have invented the huddle in 1892, to prevent other schools for the deaf from reading his hand signals, would appear to take precedence.) In 1922, Zuppke published his series of summer coaching lectures in the form of this book. The revised, 2nd, 1924 edition, in darker blue fabric, is relatively common. This true first is not. This book shows some rub to all corners, more substantial to top and bottom of spine, but has not seen any repairs, since it doesn't need any. A solid "good," with uneven patterns of browning to endpapers. FFE bore the stamped PON of Merrill Whitmore, Champaign, Ill., now crossed out and replaced with the signature of second previous owner Charles J. Spalten. A small amount of pencil underlining. Though plays are diagrammed from an old tight T or full house formation, much of the tactical advice is clearly written and remains of interest. (Yes, the forward pass was nearly fully developed.) Illustrated with diagrams only -- lacks the charming B&W photos of the later, revised edition, as made. A well-read book, but a square, intact copy without significant damage of a book generally found only at auction. 163 pp. Cat's Curiosities sells used books. We attempt to identify books which have a damp or musty smell, when we sell them at all. Otherwise, buyers should assume our used books have been shelved inside human habitations and have been exposed over the years to some combination of wood smoke, tobacco smoke, leather dressing, or other aromatic agents unknown to us. We offer no certificates of hypoallergenic purity. Bookseller Inventory # 001448
