Item Description: Palermo, Angelo Felicella, 1768, 1768. 3 vols, 4to (224 x 171 mm), pp viii 440; viii 416; 167 [9], with engraved vignette on first title and 65 double-page engraved plates; some light browning or spotting to text, the plates bright and clean, a fine copy in contemporary Italian vellum, labelled in gilt on an orange ground on spines. £17,500First edition, second issue (see below) of one of the last works in the 'florilegium' tradition. Its 65 highly decorative plates, by the author and his colleague Mario Cammerari, in oblong format, are reminiscent of florilegia more than a century earlier. The first volume is devoted to botany, particularly to the anatomy of the flower and its constituent parts. 'In fact, it contains a remarkably advanced dissertation on the sexual generation of plants, including the function of pollen and the importance of its transmission by insects, a discovery that has traditionally been attributed to the German botanist Joseph Gottlieb Koelreuter (1733 - 1806), director of the botanical garden in Karlsruhe.'The second volume deals with horticulture, in particular the cultivation of flowers. In the first sixty pages Arena describes in considerable detail how to set up a flower-garden .'Part Two contains a discussion of flowers and their cultivation. The first chapter in this section tells how to force semi-double and double blooms from the seed, and offers a genetic explanation of this phenomenon. He then describes the proper use of the seedbed, and explains when and how young plants should be transplanted . A catalogue of various "noble" species of flowers closes the second volume.' (Tongiorgi-Tomasi, An Oak Spring Flora pp 147-8). In fact this catalogue describes in detail each of the flowers illustrated in the plates. The first plate serves as a frontispiece, and depicts 'Flora, crowned with a garden of flowers, offering floral tributes to three figures - Botany (shown holding an alembic), Physics (who is looking through a magnifying glass) and Pomona (who holds a spade and basket of fruit)'. The second plate illustrates gardeners' tools, seed forms, and parts of flowers, while the third plate contains parterre designs. The remaining plates are of flowers, several to each plate. 'Arena noted that the illustrations . would be of use not only to the botanist, but to painters, sculptors, embroiderers and weavers as well' (ibid). Many of the individual flower images derive from Weinmann's Phytanthoza iconographia (1737-45), others are from Ferrari's Flora (1633). The arrangements of the flowers on each plate are however entirely Arena's compositions. The original copper plate for plate 9 which accompanies this set depicts asphodels, asters, and auriculas. Most copies of volume one are dated 1767, and the title is worded slightly differently. Some copies of the plate volume contain an additional letterpress title, but it is often not present (as in the Oak Spring copy).Nissen BBI 48; Bunyard, 'Some Early Italian Gardening Books', JRHS, 1923, pp 183-4; An Oak Spring Flora 38. Item Description: Jean de Channey (with) Thibault Paen, Avignon (and) Lyon, 1540. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very good. THE EDICTS THAT ESTABLISHED ROYAL CONTROL OVER THE FRENCH PARLIAMENT PRE-REVOLUTION Folio. Two volumes in one. ff 105 (xiii). A-T6 V4: ff. (xviii). A-D4 E2. Lettre Bâtard. Both titles within ornate woodcut architectural borders with putti, second with woodcut printer’s device incorporating the royal arms, fine large floriated gothic woodcut initials, with smaller white on black criblé in several series, engraved bookplate of Albert Pascal on pastedown. Uniform light age yellowing. Very good, clean copies in C19th olive morocco, spine with raised bands, inner dentelles richly gilt, by Allô. a.e.g. A rare, handsome and important compilation of laws relating to the administration of justice in the south of France under Francois I, with reforming edicts for particular places, such as Marseilles. They cover all aspects of practice and procedure, the initiation of proceedings, appeals, vacations, relative jurisdictions, rights and duties of all sorts of officers and counsel and the exercise of Royal authority. There is a particular abundance of material on those perennial legal topics of costs, charges and fees. The court of the Parlement of Aix was established by Louis II of Provence in 1415, but after the union of Provence with the crown in 1498, Louis XII decided to reform its administration of justice, using the Parlement of Paris as model. At first, the Count of Provence’s administration remained essentially in place, and the new Parlement remained subject to the Governor of Provence. This intermediary situation provoked some unrest and anxious to better ensure his authority, Francis I introduced these edicts in 1534 (first published in 1535), restricting the powers of the Governor, and bringing the Parlement directly under Royal control, which lasted until the Revolution. These edicts cover administration of the Parliament at every level, the election of officials (from the President down), raising and organizing the ‘Gendarmerie’, the organization of the ‘Legions’, and the fining and punishment of criminals. The work finishes with an interesting edict on the running of the justice system in the town of Marseille with its special privileges and exemptions. For some reason the Ordonnances are quite often found bound with one or more other works, including Arena's, which lists the remuneration and privileges of lawyers and judges at the Parlement of Aix. A list of the names of all the towns subject to the jurisdiction of the Parlement d’Aix is given at the end, introduced in Provençal. A very good copy of a rare work. Fairfax Murray Fr. Vol II 411. Brunet II 388. Not in BM STC Fr. French. Bookseller Inventory # L1262

Philippus Arena, adjuvante Mario Cammareri hanc, et sequentes tab" e stampate a colori, in varie tonalità. Bookseller Inventory # 9592

Item Description: [Lyon] : Stampatura Stampatorum, 1670. Couverture rigide. — Brunet I, 392. Bookseller Inventory # ABE-10270216104

Item Description: Ediciones Dos Amigos, Buenos Aires, 1985. One of 60 copies on Arches from a total issue of 62, numbered and signed by the publisher, Samuel Cesar Palui, on Ingres cream paper. Illustrated with two original full-page aquatints by Aida Carballo that were editioned with the aid of Mirta Ripoll. The text, which which contains seven original poems by Braulio Arenas in addition to one translation by Braulio Arenas, was hand set and printed letterpress by Ruben Raul Lapolla in 18pt Garamond in two colors, red for the poems' titles and initial letters and black for the text. The poem by Rimbaud, "El Barco Ebrio" ("Le Bateau Ivre") has been translated from the original French to Spanish by Braulio Arenas. The tan Ingres text pages of Rimbaud's poem are loosely inserted as pp. 17-24 in the verses of EL MUNDO POETICO DE BRAULIO ARENAS. Page size: 12-15/16 x 9-1/16 inches and 10-9/16 inches, 40pp. Bound: loose as issued in green wrapper, printed with publisher's initials on front fold-over tab, housed in red cloth and blue paper box with author and title printed on front and on spine, fine. The aquatints are lovely. The first is of a child floating a paper boat and the second a surreal cityscape. The image of the child harmonizes perfectly with the verse making the connection between the free expressions of the young with the efforts of the Surrealists. Braulio Arenas (1913-1988) Chilean poet, short story writer and dramatist, was awarded the National Prize for Literature in 1984. Considered a key Chilean surrealist, he was one of the founding members of the Mandragora (Surreal group) in 1938. Bookseller Inventory # 9819

Item Description: Book Condition: Très bon. 18 x 24. PHOTOS NUMERIQUES DISPONIBLES PAR EMAIL SUR SIMPLE DEMANDE-DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPS MAY BE AVAILABLE ON REQUEST. 18 x 24. Bookseller Inventory # 002261
