Item Description: London J Davis, 1790. Modern professional re-binding, 1/4 leather and marbled boards. A complete copy of the main work (all first editions), without the supplements. There is a little foxing, as usual, mainly confined to the text; only in Vol 13 are the plates seriously affected. About 10 plates in Vol. 1 are somewhat stained and there are a few minor stains elsewhere. Royal College of Surgeons of England stamps on title pages , together with "Sold by order of President and Council of RCSoE" stamp on obverse of titles. Some offsetting on a few plates. In general, a very good set. Full title: "English Botany; or coloured figures of British Plants, with 2592 hand-coloured engraved plates" 36 vols (bound as 18). Also included is Sowerby's personal, hand-written account book for 1805-1806, an interesting and delightful bonus. Shipping and insurance costs to be added to the purchase price. An extremely well presented and very special set of books - please feel free to contact us, either via the "ask Bookseller a Question" link, or directly. Colour illustrations. Item Description: San Francisco, 1954. First Edition. A UNIQUE OFFERING THE TWELFTH WORLD SCIENCE FICTION CONVENTION PAPERS. Held in San Francisco in the summer of 1954 with G.O.H. John Campbell, Jr., this was one of the great early gatherings. Included in this massive archive is everything that one might want to know about running a convention: Hotel rates for rooms, banquets, buffet menus, rentals, carpenters, electricians, etc. There are letters from attendees and those who wished to attend but could not; paid invoices from photo shops, printers, etc.; canceled checks (along with some unused ones as well) and check stubs; Radio scripts from local stations and press clippings and pictures from local papers; letters from major Motion Picture Studios answering requests about film availability; SIGNED letters from advertizers (including all the small presses); the entire convention mailing list; black & white photos picturing singularly or in group Ackerman, Anderson, Boucher, Bloch, Campbell, Clifton, Dick, Ellison, Evans, Gold, Mayne, Ley, Moskowitz, Nourse, E.E. Smith, Williamson, Van Vogt, Vampira, et.al. But of course the major importance of this archive has yet to be mentioned. And that's simply the great abundance of SIGNED letters, post-cards and notes from authors and artists. To wit: Anderson, Asimov (3), Blaisdell, Blish, Bond, Bonestell (4), Boucher (3), Bradbury (4), Bretnor, F. Brown, Howard Browne, Budrys, Campbell (5), Clement, Clifton (2), Collier, Conklin, DeCamp, DeFord, Dick, Dickson, Dollens (8), Emshwiller (2), Eshbach (2), Evans, Farmer, Freas (3), Greenberg (2), Gunn, Heinlein, Hunter (5), Kuttner, Ley (5), Moskowitz, Neville, Nolan (3), Nourse, Obler, Orban (3), Palmer, Pratt, Simak, E.E. Smith (2), Tucker, Williamson (3), Wylie, et.al. Finally, also included is a set of audio tapes which were taken at this convention. Now for the first time (depending on your age I guess) you can not only be privy to what went on at this convention, but also hear the actual voices of Anthony Boucher, John W. Campbell, E.E. "DOC"Smith and others too numerous to mention. A unique opportunity to snatch a bit of vintage post-war Science Fiction history. (The tapes, while definitely included in this grouping, may not be immediately available.). Bookseller Inventory # 10332

Item Description: Robert P. Smith, Philadelphia, 1852. Small quarto, six volumes. Contemporary green morocco, elaborate gilt tooling to spines and boards: borders of interwoven fillets, arabesques, and central illustration of a Jalap bindweed, six spine compartments, yellow endpapers, all page edges gilt. Spines slightly darkened, moderate foxing throughout (prominent at the plates), a few faint bruises at the front endpapers of a few volumes, and scattered discoloration of the page edge gilt. The last three volumes were authored by Nuttall, as "The North American Sylva; or A Description of the Forest Trees of the United States, Canada and Nova Scotia, Not Described in the Work of F. Andrew Michaux, and Containing All the Forest Trees Discovered in the Rocky Mountains, the Territory of Oregon, Down to the Shores of the Pacific, and into the Confines of California, as Wells as in Various Parts of the United States." Michaux's original three volumes were a result of ten years of research, illustrated with 156 colored copperplate engravings by the Route brothers, Pierre Joseph and Henri Joseph, and Pancrace Bessa, and were generally considered the authoritative text in the field upon its publication. Nuttall added 127 plates for his three volumes, making the two works united one of the most complete works on the subject, unparalleled in its production, descriptions, and illustrations. Item Description: B.M. Smith and A. J. Hill, St. Paul, Minnesota, 1863. One of the earliest maps of Dakota Territory and a Sioux Uprising rarity. The map clearly shows all of the roads, railroads, forts, towns, rivers and Indian lands in the region, as well as the exploration routes of Nicollet and others in the new Dakota Territory. The prospectus mounted on the inside cover reveals the intention of the compiler: "This map is issued in the hope that it may be found a valuable travelling companion for immigrants, U.S. deputy surveyors, military officers, and others. It is compiled from the U.S. Land and other official surveys, and where those have not yet extended, from information derivable from the reports and maps of Mons. Nicollet, Lieut Warren, and other explorers." "This [second] edition gives several new counties along the eastern boundary of the Territory, both in the inset and on the main map, and there are various new counties in the southern part of the Territory. The inset in this issue shows the creation of Idaho Territory to the west of Dakota" (Streeter). Perhaps more importantly, however, this edition of the map is important for the additions relating to the Sioux War. These include the locations of the Battles of Birch Coulee and Wood Lake (each marked with small red x's), as well as the location of Camp Release (dated on the map October 1862) and the spot near Kampeska Lake where Colonel William R. Marshall of the 7th Minnesota captured a force of Sioux warriors. We find no copy of this map on the market since the Thomas W. Streeter copy. Streeter sale 2034; Graff 3835; Phillips, A List of Maps of America , p. 257. Pocket map, lithographed by Louis Buechner, St. Paul. Inset map titled "Outline Map of Dakota Territory." Folds into publisher's green cloth covers, covers decoratively blocked in blind, titled in gilt on the upper cover, publisher's printed prospectus on the front pastedown. In fine condition. Item Description: Amsterdam, 1630. No Binding. Book Condition: Near Fine. 14 ¾ x 18 ¾ inches. Fine original color; marginal mend, else excellent condition. A beautiful example in superb original color of the classic Dutch engraving of Capt. John Smith's map of the Chesapeake Bay and region, the first European map of the area. Smith's map was a remarkably accurate work for its period and is a valuable record of Indian tribes that existed at the time. In fact, the map is unusual in acknowledging the role of Indian informants in its creation; Maltese Crosses indicate the areas beyond which were based on Indian reports. Also found on the engraving is a portrait of Powhatan in the upper left. The plate from which this map was printed was engraved in 1618 by Jodocus Hondius Junior, son of the great map and globe publisher. It is now believed (see Burden) that the plate was sold to the Blaeu firm in 1630, at which time the imprint was changed to that of Blaeu. (Ghosts of the incompletely erased J and H of the Hondius imprint are visible beneath that of Blaeu.) The 1618 state of the map, which is extremely rare, was the earliest derivative of Smith¿s map, which was originally published in England in 1612. The firm of Henricus Hondius, the other son of the master, copied the map from the Hondius-Blaeu version adding its own imprint. Thus, the sequence of Dutch editions of the map, in the folio format, is from J. Hondius Jr. to Blaeu to H. Hondius. Burden 193; Verner in Tooley America, pp. 161-62. Bookseller Inventory # 8732

Item Description: Amsterdam, 1636. No Binding. Book Condition: Near Fine. 15 x 19 ¼ inches. Fine hand color; some spotting near upper margin, else excellent. Hondius¿ beautiful, enlarged, engraving of Capt. John Smith's map of the Chesapeake Bay and region, in its only English-text edition. The first printed map of Virginia, Smith's work was remarkably accurate for its period. It was based on surveys personally commanded by him. Not only is it a valuable record of early Indian tribes, but it was also one of the few early maps of America to acknowledge the role of Indian informants in its creation. The several Maltese Crosses on the work indicate areas beyond which the geography was based on Indian reports rather than on direct observation. The verso text describes Virginia¿s native peoples, their manner of settlement, and religious beliefs, but also the region¿s. Also found on the engraving is a portrait of Powhatan in the upper left. Hondius¿s edition is the only one on which the Native American figure in the right is facing toward the Chesapeake Bay. Burden 228; Tooley,America, p. 165. Bookseller Inventory # 10024

Prints and portfolio in flawless, pristine condition. From Mark Haworth-Booth: "The artists represented here work with the idea that manipulation -- technical, political, psychological and an endless menu of ramifications -- is the underlying reality of our time. The images here do not so much 'express' this; it's what they are." From the publisher: "'Metamorphoses' is among the first fine-art portfolios of digital photography ever produced. Featured are dynamic new works by some of the most significant established and emerging artists of our time. Marrying the revolutionary potentials of digital image-making with the Iris digital printing process, this portfolio represents the state of the art of a nascent form of photographic expression. At a pivotal moment in the history of photography, this work represents a metamorphosis: the transformation of the medium from its photochemical origins to a new, digital foundation. The artists included in the 'Metamorphoses' portfolio were chosen for the sophistication and eloquence of their visual statements. Working in collaboration with Nash Editions in the proofing and production of the edition, these artists have created digital prints of photographic images that were impossible or simply unimagined before the emergence of computer-imaging techniques. A new vision is emerging at the crossroads of art and technology, and now, along with it, we have a printing method compatible with that vision." Signed by Author. Bookseller Inventory # 107348
