Item Description: Paris, Arthus Bertrand, 1824, 1824. Couverture rigide. Livre d'occasion. Item Description: Arthus Bertrand, Paris, 1824. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Octavo. Contemporary quarter black skiver, blue boards, spine gilt in compartments. Engraved frontispiece. 1 leaf of publisher¿s ads at rear. Spine rolled, binding rubbed, spotting and toning of contents, primarily in the margins. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. Author Constance de Salm (1767-1845) was a highly regarded French writer and moral philosopher, and an important member of a circle of leading intellectuals and scientists. Though forgotten for much of the 19th and 20th centuries, she is now the subject of renewed academic interest, providing a window onto the lives and intellectual networks of women in Revolutionary and Napoleonic France. De Salm spent most of her life promoting the equality of women, and her most important work, the poem Épître aux femmes (1797), was a direct attack on the language and social structures that uphold patriarchy, as well as an exhortation to women to liberate themselves. During her career ¿she used a variety of genres to address issues of importance to women, such as equal access to educational opportunities and to family courts, recognition of intellectual achievement, the infantilization of women and the denigration of their abilities, the cost to women¿s health of reproduction, and adequately renumerated work for poor, widowed, and single women. In many ways she can be usefully compared to Mary Wollstonecraft¿¿ (Hine, Constance de Salm, p. 4). De Salm¿s friendships with scientists were an important part of her intellectual life. She was close to the astronomer Joseph-Jérome Lalande, who left her his unpublished manuscripts and asked her to write his eulogy. ¿Not only did she know Lalande well enough to have him entrust her with securing his legacy, but she was acquainted with renowned scientists like the natural philosopher Auguste de Candolle, the botany professor at the Jardin du Roi, Antoine de Jussieu, the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt¿ all of whom were among her circle of friends and frequented her salon¿ Her involvement can be used to illustrate the shift from earlier philosophical debates among scientists to the increasing interest on the part of women in scientific culture in the latter part of the eighteenth and the early part of the nineteenth centuries ¿ (Hine pp. 2-3). The present text, Twenty-Four Hours in the Life of a Sensitive Woman, is an epistolary novel exploring the mindset of a woman whose lover may have abandoned her for another. It was praised by her friend, the author Stendhal and is now rare in the first edition. We can locate only one institutional copy, at the British Library. Bookseller Inventory # 000158

Item Description: Camp Aldie, Va, 1862. 3pp. 4to on a folded folio sheet. A Prussian Princess in the Confederacy. Letter written by adventuress and military heroine Princess Agnes Salm-Salm. Agnes LeClerc Joy arrived in Washington, D.C. in the fall of 1861, where she met and captured the heart of Prussian Prince Felix zu Salm-Salm, whom she married in August 1862. "The energetic bride immediately took charge of her husband's career and succeeded in obtaining his appointment as colonel in the Eighth, later the Sixty-eighth, New York Infantry Regiment and eventually his commission as brigadier general. Spirited and adventuresome but soon taking interest in the plight of wounded soldiers, Agnes accompanied her husband on his tours of duty in Virginia, Alabama, and Georgia, where Felix Salm-Salm was appointed military governor of Atlanta in 1865" - ANB. She was subsequently involved in both the war in Mexico and the Franco-Prussian War.Agnes writes, in part:"My dear friend, When I had the pleasure of seeing you, I promised to write and tell how I was getting on and all my adventures. To day week I left Washington to join my husband accompanied by Col. Corwin a friend of ours and a guide. It was a very cold and rather a long ride to Gen. [Franz] Sigel's headquarters which we found at Greenville. My husband's regiment had left in the morning for Aldie which is twenty miles in advance. So we had to stop in a farmhouse where we were fortunate enough to procure quarters for the night, provided with a pass to Gen. Stobel's headquarters near Hopeville Gap. We reached it at noon and proceeded after a short rest to Aldi, through the wood, having heard that some of White's cavalry are roving about there and around to my husband's armies." She goes on to discuss accommodations at the camp, being relocated by various officers who desired her farmhouse room for their headquarters or lodging, and finally ending up sharing a tent with her husband, "where the indignant soldiers had made some arrangements on hearing that I was turned out. Well, now I am here gypsying in a tent, but I must say I like it very well, because I am always with my lord and master. Just now the whole cavalry, some artillery and one regiment of infantry are advancing toward Middelburg where the rebels are in force. We expect every moment a fight."An interesting letter written by this colorful woman. A later magazine clipping about her life has been tipped to the final leaf. Old fold lines, slight separation at some folds. Later magazine clipping tipped onto final leaf. Quite clean. Very good 3pp. 4to on a folded folio sheet. Bookseller Inventory # 253043

Item Description: Th. Fr. Thiriart, 18201822, Cologne, 1820. 3 volumes. Small 8vo (15.5 x 9.5 cm). Contemporary green paper wrappers. 35, [1 blank]; [2], 37-73, [1 blank]; 47, [1 blank] pp. A catalogue with additional commentaries and revisions of Salm's regular lists of succulents. Salm-Reifferscheid-Dyck (1773-1861) started collecting succulents at Schloss Dyck in 1800 after consorting with the leading French botanists in Paris and took lessons in paintings from Redouté after he saw the illustrations Redouté made for Candolle's Plantarum succulentarum historia. The first listing of succulents was a short pamphlet printed in 1809, the next listing was published in 1816 and was followed by a more regular publication of catalogues printed in very small numbers. They acted as "exchange lists with the botanical gardens and private collectors with whom Salm-Dyck exchanged specimens" (Rowley). After his death in 1861 the collections at Schloss Dyck soon started to break-up. The herbarium was the first to go, but his unrivalled succulent collection survived until the First World War. What was left of his magnificent library was auctioned in 1992-1993. "Only then did the extent of the loss become apparent: in addition to Salm-Dyck's manuscripts, notebooks and fine paintings [.] there were several editions of his garden catalogue unrecorded by Pritzel, Stafleu & Cowan and other recognised bibliographies, and unseen by succulentists in the never-ending search for prior publication of names and dates of introduction of new species" (Rowley). Very good copy. BMC NH, p. 1792 (vol. I only); Pritzel 8009; Rowley, "Salm-Dyck's Catalogues", in: Taxon vol. 42, no. 4, pp. 845-851; Stafleu & Cowan 10127. Bookseller Inventory # C8KGJSLLGCMP

Bookseller Inventory # 3841
