The $3.95 jacket flap price is unclipped. This book is Abbey's third novel and is about a man who decides to defy the whole United States government. The man is John Vogelin, owner of a tract of land in New Mexico. The story is told through the eyes of Billy, his grandson, who lives most of the year in Pennsylvania. He always spends his summers with his grandfather, but this summer is different from all the ones that have past and from any that he will ever know again. On Billy's arrival, there is an uneasiness in the air. Vogelin has been told that the Bar-V Ranch has been condemned to make room for the White Sands Missile Range. He has been ordered to vacate, but John Vogelin is not one to be pushed around - not even by the federal government. Billy naturally believes that his grandfather is entirely right, and Lee Mackie, now in his thirties, who once worked for the old man, has promised to support him in his battle. The novel tells of Vogelin's struggles and of the day to day events of a memorable summer. The irony is that none of the enemies of the old man - not the government lawyers, not the sheriff and his men, not the military police who finally arrive on the scene - wants to drive Vogelin and Billy from the land that has been in the family for as long as anyone can remember. But all of them are in the service of an institution whose power is far greater than that of any individual. Abbey's book is set against the background of the vast Southwest, its wide plains and deserts and mountains. It is a book, says the author, written in defense of all the lost people whose homes are stolen and destroyed by government for the sake of more and bigger highways, more and bigger dams, more and bigger factories, more and bigger prisons, more and bigger bombing ranges, more and bigger government.
