Item Description: Kamakura Shobo / Eitaro Hasegawa, Tokyo, 1979. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. SIGNED TO GERSHON LEGMAN BY AKIRA YOSHIZAWA. TWO VOLUMES. Two Near fine hardback First Edition First Printings with minimal foxing covers in Near Fine Dust Jackets with minimal foxing. Text in Japanese. 8vo. 71 pp. 73 pp. Akira Yoshizawa (1911-2005) is considered the grandmaster of origami. He is largely responsible for the transformation of origami from a craft into a modern art form. "One of my dreams is to go into the mountains and learn to make paper from trees the way people did in the old days. I want to go with the young people and start my own origami village, and there we will make and dye paper so it will last a long, long time. Master Akira Yoshizawa quoted in "Folding the Universe", 1989. "Before Mr. Yoshizawa, paper folding was generally dismissed as a children's pastime. Folded according to a rigid set of rules that had remained unchanged for generations, origami figures were usually flat and static. Mr. Yoshizawa, who was self-taught, broke with tradition. He pioneered a technique, known as wet folding, that allows dampened paper to be molded into sculptural forms. He also pioneered a system of origami notation that allows readers of any language to follow a set of instructions. Using dotted lines to indicate the folds and arrows to indicate the directions of the folds. The system is widely used today." (NY Times obituary. April 2, 2005)Gershon Legman (1917-1999) a renowned American cultural critic and folklorist, became interested in origami--or as he referred to it in his bibliography "paper folding" in 1952. A significant moment came when Legman discovered a forgotten article.titled 'The Art of Paper-Folding in Japan' by Professor Frederick Starr. Intrigued by this article, Legman decided to delve further. The result was his 1952 pamphlet "Bibliography of Paper-Folding" which summarized, in bibliographic outline almost the entire history then known about paper folding. It listed with brief notes books in English and other languages which Legman was able to find in the libraries to which he had access. It was the first such bibliography published and brought origami forward as a discipline with a literature that could be referenced. From there Legman worked hard to acquaint himself with the paper folding community around the world. This led to his discovery of the work of Akira Yoshizawa, Ligia Montoya and other paper folding artisans. His acquaintance with Yoshizawa began with correspondence in 1953. A box of origami figures from Japan soon followed. Legman was astonished by the complexity and sophistication of Yoshizawa's work. He made it his vocation to bring Yoshizawa's work to the attention of the Western world. To that end he was able to arrange a full scale exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in the summer of 1955. So Yoshizawa was discovered in the west a scant four years after his emergence in Japan and credit for that rested with Gershon Legman. Overall, it would be a fair statement to say that with his bibliography, championing of Akira Yoshizawa and subsequent encouragement and involvement Legman was a key figure in the creation of the modern era of paper-folding as an art form in the West. This is a Unique Association Copy in the field of paper-folding. (See David Lister on Gershon Legman at the British Origami Society website.). Bookseller Inventory # 47242

Item Description: Kluwer Academic Publishers, United States, 1998. Hardback. Book Condition: New. 1998 ed. 234 x 156 mm. Language: English Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.TUrbulence modeling encounters mixed evaluation concerning its impor- tance. In engineering flow, the Reynolds number is often very high, and the direct numerical simulation (DNS) based on the resolution of all spatial scales in a flow is beyond the capability of a computer available at present and in the foreseeable near future. The spatial scale of energetic parts of a turbulent flow is much larger than the energy dissipative counterpart, and they have large influence on the transport processes of momentum, heat, matters, etc. The primary subject of turbulence modeling is the proper es- timate of these transport processes on the basis of a bold approximation to the energy-dissipation one. In the engineering community, the turbulence modeling is highly evaluated as a mathematical tool indispensable for the analysis of real-world turbulent flow. In the physics community, attention is paid to the study of small-scale components of turbulent flow linked with the energy-dissipation process, and much less interest is shown in the foregoing transport processes in real-world flow. This research tendency is closely related to the general belief that universal properties of turbulence can be found in small-scale phenomena. Such a study has really contributed much to the construction of statistical theoretical approaches to turbulence. The estrangement between the physics community and the turbulence modeling is further enhanced by the fact that the latter is founded on a weak theoretical basis, compared with the study of small-scale turbulence.
