N/D. Condition: New. 1. - Libro bajo demanda.

H./ 1909. Al-Suyuti (c. 1445?1505 AD) was an Egyptian religious scholar, juristic expert and teacher, and one of the most prolific writers in the Islamic theology of the Middle Ages. In 1486, he was appointed to a chair in the mosque of Baybars in Cairo. Al-Suyuti wrote about diverse subjects in many works, over 700 according to the Dalil makhtutat al-Suyuti ("Directory of al-Suyuti's manuscripts"), although numbers vary from more than 500 and up to 981, according to a study made in 1995. However, some of his works are just short pamphlets, including legal opinions. In this work he discusses various aspects of the Arabic language. #35054.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. First Edition. [27], 179 pp., [13], [1, errata], Arabic text, [1, introductory note in English], title in English & Arabic, edited & introduced by Philip K. Hitti, 2 facsimile illustrations from original manuscripts, contemporary green cloth, lightly soiled & rubbed, remainder of stickers on spine & upper cover, small stamp on Arabic title page, index. This work by the famous Egyptian historian and traditionalist, Jalal-ud-Din us-Suyuti (1445-1505 A. D.), is based on two ancient manuscripts- the only two in existence- one in Cairo and the other in Leiden. Of the five to six hundred books sketched by the pen of this indefatigable author, whose knowledge was encyclopaedic in its range and character, this book is one of the few valuable ones that have hitherto been practically unknown to the world, neither Brockelmann, Nicholson, Huart, nor Zaidan having ever mentioned it, or referred to the manuscripts, in their histories of Arabic literature. The book is a collection of 200 brief biographical sketches of the most distinguished men and women in the Muslim world who lived in or about the fifteenth century?. Editor?s note. #34244.

Al-Suyuti, in full Jalal al-Din Abu al-Fadl 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr al-Suyuti , was an Egyptian author and teacher, born in 1445 in Cairo, Egypt, where he also died in 1505. His works deal with a wide variety of subjects, the Islamic religious sciences predominating. The son of a judge, al-Suyu?i was tutored by a Sufi (Muslim mystic) friend of his father. He was precocious and became a teacher when still young, in 1462. A controversial figure, he was deeply embroiled in the political conflicts and theological disputes of his time, and at one point he proclaimed himself the mujaddid (renewer") of the Islamic faith. In 1486 he was appointed head of the Sufi Lodge (Khanaqah) attached to the mosque of Baybars in Cairo and was living in virtual retirement. When in 1501 he tried to reduce the stipends of Sufi scholars at the mosque.

The son of a judge, al-Suyuti was tutored by a Sufi (Muslim mystic) friend of his father. He was precocious and became a teacher when still young, in 1462. A controversial figure, he was deeply embroiled in the political conflicts and theological disputes of his time, and at one point he proclaimed himself the mujaddid (?renewer?) of the Islamic faith. In 1486 he was appointed head of the Sufi Lodge (Khanaqah) attached to the mosque of Baybars in Cairo and was living in virtual retirement. When in 1501 he tried to reduce the stipends of Sufi scholars at the mosque, a revolt broke out, and al-Suyuti was nearly killed. After his trial, he was placed under house arrest on the island of Raw?ah (near Cairo). He worked there in seclusion until his death. Al-Suyuti's works number more than 500; many are mere booklets, and others are encyclopaedic. He was the co-author of Tafsir al-Jalalayn (?Commentary of the Two Jalals?), a word-by-word commentary on the Qur'an, the first part of which was written by Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli. His Itqan fi 'ulum al-Qur'an (?Mastery in the Sciences of the Qur'an?) is a well-known work on Qur'anic exegesis. Among his works that have been translated into English is Ta'rikh al-khulafa' (History of the Caliphs), as well as a work on cosmology, another on exegesis, and several others. Al-Suyuti was a compiler of genius rather than an original writer, but it is precisely his ability to select and abridge that makes his works so useful. This faculty characterises his most important philological work, Al-Muzhir f? 'ulum al-lughah wa anwa'iha (?The Luminous Work Concerning the Sciences of Language and its Subfields?), a linguistic encyclopaedia covering such topics as the history of the Arabic language, phonetics, semantics, and morphology. It was largely derived from the works of two predecessors, Ibn Jinni and Ibn Faris. (Britannica Online Ecyc 7/4/09). #35051.

Majid al-Din as-Shaybani al-Jazari (1149-1209), widely known as Ibn al-Athir, was from a family of scholars. His siblings were very popular among historians, especially his youngest brother Abu al-Hassan ibn Muhammad, better known as ?Aki ?Izz al-Din ibn al-Athir, who was known for his excellent written works such as al-Kamil fi al-Tarikh and ?Usul al-Ghabah fi Ma?rifat al-Sahabah. Majid al-Din was well known for his depth of knowledge and problem solving skills. Imam Abu Shama?ah said about him: ?He read hadith and excelled at it. He was extremely intellectual with pious characteristics?. He wrote many works and among the most popular ones is this work, which is an encyclopaedic dictionary of reports and prophetic traditions, either problematic in their wordings or not immediately clear. #7464.

4to (180 x 230 mm). 323 ff. Arabic manuscript on paper. Black naskh script with important words and phrases picked out in red. Disbound leaves housed in a contemporary custom carrying case in full leather and painted paper pastedowns. A cornerstone of hadith scholarship by one of the leading figures of medieval science. Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (1445-1505) was an enormously prolific polymath whose "versatility stands out as unique in the history of Arabic literature" (cf. GAL II, 144). He was named the Renewer of the Faith for his century, considered a foremost master of hadith - partly based on this work - and was lauded as an historian, biographer, and encyclopedist. With over 300 attributed works, al-Suyuti was among the most prolific of Muslim authors, and his impact on all fields is hard to overstate. - This manuscript is an abridgement of one of his two most famous hadith collections, which detailed the sayings, writings, and traditions of the Prophet in tens of thousands of individual examples. Even standing alone, the "Lesser Compilation" in its entirety covers over 10,000 hadith, and is only thus named in comparison to its larger counterpart, Al-Jami' al-Kabir. Left unfinished upon al-Suyuti's death, al-Jami' al-Kabir runs to about thirty volumes. The "Lesser Compilation", Al-Jami' al-Saghir, included many of the hadith identified by al-Suyuti as containing records of the Prophet's speech which run contrary to his actions. Even its commentaries are immense: the most famous commentary of the Lesser Compilation was completed by hadith scholar al-Munawi (1545-1641) and comprises eight volumes. Through such commentaries, al-Suyuti's monumental scholarly undertakings remained in current use long after his lifetime. - Disbound, with some bookworming; likely a few leaves disordered. - GAL II 144; GAL II 147, 56.

Large 8vo (165 x 240 mm). 122 ff. Arabic manuscript on paper. 17 lines of black ink with occasional important words and phrases picked out in red. Contemporary burgundy leather ruled and stamped in blind, marbled endpapers. A medical manuscript by one of the leading figures of medieval science, Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (1445-1505). Al-Suyuti was an enormously prolific polymath whose "versatility stands out as unique in the history of Arabic literature" (cf. GAL II, 144). Most printed editions of Al-Tibb al-Nabawi seem to be falsely attributed to Dhahabi, making this manuscript copy, with the correct attribution, of particular interest. Indeed, it is considered one of al-Suyuti's notable works, and comprises the popular and important genre of prophetic medicine, one of the many fields in which al-Suyuti was informed and wrote in the medieval period. - Light exterior wear, with remarkably tidy and clear script. - GAL II, p. 147, no. 41.

8vo. (24), 179, (17) pp. Contemporary full vellum with handwritten title label to spine (faded). First Latin translation of this three-part pharmacological treatise on the nature and effect of medicines gained from animals, vegetables, and minerals (including some quite superstitious material), published under the name of the mediaval Egyptian polymath Abd al-Rahman Al-Suyuti, whose "versatility stands out as unique in the history of Arabic literature" (GAL II, 144), but probably assembled from various Arabic sources. The first part, covering animals, is likely Al-Suyuti's own "Diwan al-Hayawan", translated by Abraham Ecchellensis after a manuscript in Cardinal Mazarin's library; the authors and manuscript sources of the following two parts remain unidentified. Within the notes, this edition uses several Greek, Hebrew, and even Arabic interspersions in the type. - Some browning to paper. 18th century French note on lower flyleaf; handwritten duplicate note and stamp to title-page. Insignificant paper flaws to pp. 103-106, merely affecting the pagination; small edge tear in p. 151f.; loss to lower margin of last leaf but one of the index (not touching text). - Krivatsy 11586.
