First edition, early printing of this curated collection of Einsteinâs writings. Octavo, original leather, frontispiece. Boldly signed by Helen Dukas and Banesh Hoffman on the front free endpaper. Helen Dukas (1896â"1982) was Albert Einsteinâs longtime secretary and trusted confidante, serving in that role from 1928 until his death in 1955. Deeply involved in preserving and organizing Einsteinâs legacy, she co-edited several collections of his writings and letters, and played a key role in curating the Einstein Archives at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Banesh Hoffmann (1906â"1986) was a physicist and mathematician who collaborated with Albert Einstein and made significant contributions to relativity and quantum mechanics. Near fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Uncommon signed by both contributors. Albert Einstein: The Human Side (1979), edited by Helen Dukas and Banesh Hoffmann, offers a unique perspective on Einstein beyond his scientific achievements by compiling his personal letters, reflections, and anecdotes. Unlike traditional biographies that focus on his contributions to physics, this collection highlights Einsteinâs thoughts on philosophy, politics, ethics, and personal relationships, revealing his wit, humility, and deep moral convictions. Through carefully selected writings, the book presents Einstein as both a brilliant scientist and a deeply introspective individual who grappled with the social and ethical implications of his work.

Signed limited edition of Einstein's singular autobiography. Octavo, original brown cloth, top edge gilt, frontispiece, illustrated throughout. One of 760 numbered copies signed and dated "Albert Einstein â49", this is number 225. In fine condition. Housed in the original slipcase which is in near fine condition. Edited by Paul Arthur Schilpp. Frontispiece portrait of Einstein by Yousuf Karsh. An exceptional example. Written by the man considered the "Person of the Century" by Time magazine, this is not a glimpse into Einstein's personal life, but an extension and elaboration into his thinking on science. Two of the great theories of the physical world were created in the early 20th century: the theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. Einstein created the theory of relativity and was also one of the founders of quantum theory. Here, Einstein describes the failure of classical mechanics and the rise of the electromagnetic field, the theory of relativity, and of the quanta. "The greatest physicist of the 20th century" (PMM 408).

This work is the first separate trade edition. The recipient of this copy, Dr. Wilfrid Perrett, worked with Dr. George Barker Jeffery, to translate many of Einstein's most notable works into English. Perrett was a "distinguished German scholar," and would "overlook the literary side of the work," while Jeffery would oversee the mathematical translations. The two worked together on Das Relativitätsprinzip [On the Relativity Principle] beginning in 1922, and numerous other works by Einstein over his career. (Jammer, 113-114).

First edition of this volume of Einstein's speeches and letters concerning his views on Zionism. Octavo, bound in full morocco by the Harcourt Bindery with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in five compartments within raised gilt bands, gilt ruling to the front and rear panel, gilt signature to the front panel, gilt inner dentelles stamp-signed by the Harcourt Bindery, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. In fine condition. Translated and edited with an introduction by Leon Simon. An exceptional presentation. Einstein was a prominent supporter of both Labor Zionism and efforts to encourage Jewish-Arab cooperation. He supported the creation of a Jewish national homeland in the British mandate of Palestine but was opposed to the idea of a Jewish state "with borders, an army, and a measure of temporal power." In a letter to Jawaharlal Nehru dated June 13, 1947, he asserted, "Long before the emergence of Hitler I made the cause of Zionism mine because through it I saw a means of correcting a flagrant wrong. The Jewish people alone has for centuries been in the anomalous position of being victimized and hounded as a people, though bereft of all the rights and protections which even the smallest people normally has.Zionism offered the means of ending this discrimination." Einstein's speeches, lectures, and letters concerning Zionism were first published in 1930 by The Soncino Press and eleven of these essays were later collected in The World as I See It, published in 1933, which Einstein dedicated "to the Jews of Germany".

First edition of Einstein's collection of social science-related articles, addresses and speeches. Octavo, original cloth, frontispiece of Einstein. Association copy, inscribed by the author in the year of publication on the front free endpaper, "Estella mit herzlichen Grussen A. Einstein. 50." The recipient, Estella Katzenellenbogen was Einstein's former lover in the 1920s. The pair were often seen attending concerts together, and she was known to have visited Einstein at his summer housed in Caputh. She was best known as a major collector of East Asian art as well as German and French Impressionism and Expressionism. Although baptized as a Protestant, her Jewish ancestry compelled her to flee Germany, first to Switzerland in 1936 and then to the United States in 1939. She settled in Los Angeles where she ran a branch of the Nierendorf Gallery for a brief time in mid 1940s. As this piece attests, Einstein remained in contact with her following her emigration to the United States. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. An exceptional association. Out of My Later Years is Einstein's collection of essays considering everything that interests him as a scientist, philosopher and humanitarian. Signed by Albert Einstein on the slip to the title page and inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Karl W. Deutsch with the author's compliments Philipp Frank August 10, 1950." Philipp Frank was a physicist, mathematician and also a philosopher during the first half of the 20th century. He was a logical-positivist, and a member of the Vienna Circle. He was influenced by Mach and was one of the Machists criticised by Lenin in Materialism and Empirio-criticism. He studied physics at the University of Vienna and graduated in 1907 with a thesis in theoretical physics under the supervision of Ludwig Boltzmann. Albert Einstein recommended him as his successor for a professorship at the German Charles-Ferdinand University of Prague, a position which he held from 1912 until 1938. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. SIGNED LIMITED FIRST EDITION of Albert Einstein: Philosopher Scientist, # 247 of ONLY 760 numbered copies, signed and dated by Albert Einstein. AN OUTSTANDING COPY IN ORIGINAL SLIPCASE. "The closest Einstein ever came to writing an autobiography. Indispensable" (Abraham Pais, "Subtle is the Lord," 1982, on the Autobiographical Notes in Philosopher-Scientist). The seventh volume in The Library of Living Philosophers series, Albert Einstein: Philosopher-Scientist (Evanston, IL: The Library Living Philosophers, 1949). is a tribute volume with deliberations by Einstein and some of the most important scientists of his era, examining the stunning scale and scope of the Einstein corpus. This important volume contains Einstein's autobiography, itself an noteworthy scientific contribution, specially written for the book, and includes a bibliography of his works plus twenty-five scientists' discussions of Einstein's work and achievements. Contributors include Bohr, Born, Reichenbach, Pauli, and a noteworthy essay by Godel in which he argues that Parmenides correctly explicated change as merely an illusion based upon our conceptual framework and our sensory perceptions. Einstein's response to twenty-five scientists' discussion of his work (including the Einstein-Bohr debates) concludes this cornerstone Einstein acquisition in his "Remarks Concerning the Essays Brought Together in this Co-Operative Volume." What were the famous Einstein-Bohr debates about -- and who "won" them? So many commentators, including the protagonists themselves, have remarked on this clash of the two titans, two determined seekers after truth. Particularly engrossing, Niels Bohr's contribution to this volume of Living Philosophers recalls the countless discussions and decades-long disagreements he and Einstein shared about the future of fundamental physics. "Bohr's account of his discussion with Einstein has been called 'one of the great scientific debates in the history of physics, comparable, perhaps, only to the Newton-Leibniz controversy of the early eighteenth century In both cases it was a clash of diametrically opposed philosophical views in both cases it was a clash between two of the greatest minds of their time'" (Jammer, 120). "It is generally agreed that Bohr's article of 1949, "Discussion with Einstein on Epistemological Problems in Physics" [pp. 199-241] is his finest exposé on complementarity" (Pais, Niels Bohr's Times, 428). As Paul Schilpp relishes in his Preface, "[Bohr's] recollections of conversations with Einstein on the epistemological aspects of physical science would never have come into being, were it not for the peculiar nature of this series." Octavo (approx. 6.75 x 9.75 x 1.75), original publisher's leatherette with gilt image of Einstein's signature on front board, bevelled edges, top edge gilt, pages uncut. Illustrated with 8 figures in text, photographic frontispiece after Yousuf Karsh, photographic and facsimile illustrations, limitation statement bearing Einstein's signature on the front free endpaper. Closed tear on two pages of the Index not affecting readability, else a very fine copy in publisher's original brown-gray slipcase. Lacks rarely found, fragile original glassine. Foundational, even indispensable to any collection of Einstein and modern physics. Best price on the market! Book #Bv2201. $13,500. Other landmarks of science by Newton, Bacon, and Galileo available. Please inquire. Signed by Author(s).

Near fine with light toning to the endpapers in the scarce original dust jacket which is in good condition with some wear. Translated and edited with an introduction by Leon Simon. Exceptionally rare signed.

1st Edition - Limited. 1st Edition - Limited. We are going to experience another full Solar Eclipse April 8, 2024. This volume was to celebrate Albert Einstein and the Solar Eclipse of Jun 30, 1954 and June 20, 1955. Unusual Signed Kilfitt/Zoomar Eclipse Book with original Einstein, Frank Back Photo. 8vo, [5 1/2" x 8 1/2"], 40pp, signed and inscribed by Dr. Back on the second free endpaper. "To Leslie and Duke. We should never make statements witch are not planned correct and checked by us .we should not impress by telling sometime .stories in order to make contributions or to say something. Talking is silence. "Silence is gold" Wish you the very best from the heart. T F Back sept 11 1965" A fine copy in handmade decorative paper covered boards, printed glossy paper label on the upper cover limited edition of 3000 copies in the original glassine outer wrapper showing some light sunning. This volume was dedicated to Albert Einstein and is the only book that was ever written by "The Father of the Zoom Lens". With / An original black & white, silver gelatin 5 x 7 photograph of Dr. Albert Einstein and Dr. Frank Gerald Back seated together, in very fine condition acquired directly from Dr. Back's estate. This photograph was taken circa 1954 and is one of the images published in this limited edition. With An 18" x 22" blueprint [folded] of the Solar Eclipse Spectrograph size "C" drawing. It was made from the original drawing, dated 4/1/55, drawn by Zoomar's Chief Designer, Alfred Joseph Quittner ("AJQ"), & approved by Dr. Back ("FGB"). A very interesting package indeed. Dr. Back was a very close friend of Albert Einstein. Dr. Einstein persuaded the author to take the trip commemorated in this beautifully produced volume in order to capture the total eclipse of the sun, which occurred on June 20, 1955. Dr. Back intended to provide conclusive evidence for Einstein's theory of relativity by calculating the optical distortion, if any, of starlight caused by the sun's gravity. Earlier, in 1919, Einstein's general relativity principles were supported by observations of a solar eclipse. The two scientists conferred on the project for over a year. Armed with a special Zoomar designed & built, wide-angle, solar-eclipse, spectrograph, Dr. Back was off to the Philippine Islands to board a military jet & chase the eclipse. Einstein however died while Back was on his way to Manila. Unable to report the excursion to his friend, Dr. Back dedicated this book to his memory. Dr. Frank Back held over 200 patents directly relating to photographic equipment. He was the founder & president of Zoomar, Inc. The photographic term, " zoom" was derived from Zoomar. Dr. Back created the first widely used zoom lenses for motion picture and television; then in 1959, introduced the first zoom lens for still cameras with the introduction of the 36-82mm/f2.8 Voigtlander Zoomar. Dr. Back & Zoomar purchased the great Heinz Kilfitt optical factory of Munich, Germany in 1966 & it became a subsidiary of Zoomar, Inc. This volume was never widely distributed & when Zoomar, Inc. ceased operations at Glen Cove, Long Island, many cases of this book were discovered & unceremoniously trashed. The existing number of copies is unknown but the book is not frequently encountered. This copy came from the personal estate of Dr. Frank Gerald Back & it is one of the few copies signed by him. An excellent example suited for collectors of Science, Astronomy, Einstein, Zoomar, or Photographic History in general. In a lovely custom clamshell case with a window insert displaying the original Einstein/Back photo. *On page 13 there is a typo. He wrote July 30,1954 instead of June 30, 1954 and was never changed.

First edition of this Einstein biography written by Rudolf Kayser, a German literary historian and husband to Albert Einstein's stepdaughter Ilse under the pseudonym Anton Reiser. Octavo, original cloth, frontispiece of Einstein. Signed and dated by Einstein in the year of publication on the front free endpaper, "Albert Einstein 1930." Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Rare signed and in the original dust jacket. Albert Einstein developed the general theory of relativity, one of the two pillars of modern physics (alongside quantum mechanics). Einstein's work is also known for its influence on the philosophy of science. Einstein is best known in popular culture for his massâ"energy equivalence formula E = mc2 (which has been dubbed "the world's most famous equation"). He received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his "services to theoretical physics", in particular his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect, a pivotal step in the evolution of quantum theory (David Bodanis).

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Original brown cloth, top edge gilt, publisher's slipcase. Very fine, with the fragile slipcase in excellent condition. A superb copy. FIRST EDITION. One of 760 numbered copies signed and dated by Einstein. This important volume contains Einstein's autobiography, specially written for the book, a bibliography of his works, twenty-five scientists' discussions of Einstein's work and achievements, with Einstein's replies. Contributors of essays include Niels Bohr, Max Born, Wolfgang Pauli, and Kurt Godel. I. I. Rabi's review in Science hailed this as a "most important and significant volume. It is most difficult to get scientists to write simply and clearly about the fundamentals of their science and the leading philosophical ideas that guide them. In this book there is played out a great scientific drama of the last two decades. The book starts with an intellectual autobiography by Einstein himself. He satirically calls it his obituary. I know of no other to compare with it. Neither Newton nor Maxwell nor any of the other great giants of physics had his Schilpp [the editor] to catalyze such an effort. After reading Einstein's article one realizes the great loss this is to scientific culture" (Science, 21 April 1950). This is an especially fine signed copy of an important book in the Einstein canon. Signed by Author(s).

First edition of this work praised by Einstein himself. Octavo, original cloth, illustrations by Anthony Sadoro. Presentation copy, warmly inscribed by the author to Anne Goodman on the front free endpaper, "For Anne Goodman- who was on the receiving end of the first interview this reporter ever gave and the pleasantest one he ever participated in- Gratefully Lincoln Barnett New York City- March 3, 1949." Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Jacket design by William Meek. Foreword by Albert Einstein. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed. In the century since the publication of the special theory of relativity, there remains a tendency to venerate Einstein's genius without actually understanding his achievement. This book offers the opportunity to truly comprehend the workings of one of humanity's greatest minds. Acclaimed by Einstein himself, it is among the clearest, most readable expositions of relativity theory. It explains the problems Einstein faced, the experiments that led to his theories, and what his findings reveal about the forces that govern the universe. The concepts of relativity and the fourth dimension unfold with all the vivid excitement of research into the unknown, in language anyone can readily understand.

Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First edition, second printing. Presentation copy; signed and inscribed by Albert Einstein in full to the front endpaper: "For Mrs. Kahn/ Albert Einstein/ Pasadena 1931." Original publisher's red cloth, front board lettered in black and ruled in gilt, spine lettered in gilt and black. About very good copy; spine faded, upper spine worn and lightly frayed, some scattered spots and small stains to covers. Housed in a custom leather clamshell box. Albert Einstein is a bibliography by Anton Reiser, a pseudonym for Rudolf Kayser, the husband of Einstein's stepdaughter. Kayser, a German literary historian, gives an intimate view of the life of one of the greatest physicists who has ever lived. Einstein describes his familiarity with the author in his introduction of the book, writing, "The author of this book is one that knows me rather intimately in my endeavors, thoughts, beliefs- in bedroom slippers." The book is divided into six chapters: Childhood and Early Life, Self-Support, Formulation of The Theory of Relativity, War-Time and After, Fame, and Einstein Today. This biography was published in 1930, three short years before Einstein was forced to flee Germany, due to Adolf Hitler's rise to power and new laws banning Jews from holding official positions. Shortly after fleeing the country, Einstein's books were targeted in the Nazi book burnings, a 5,000 Reichsmark bounty was put on his head, and the Nazi government pilfered his cottage and sailboat. Rudolf Kayser, the author, was also forced to leave Germany in 1935 because of his Jewish heritage. Albert Einstein was researching at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena in 1931. He inscribed this copy that same year. Signed.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. Frontispiece, xvi, 781 pp; 8 figs. Original blue cloth. There is creasing of some pages in the margins. Good, in dust jacket. The dust jacket is quite worn (see photos). First Edition. SIGNED BY ALBERT EINSTEIN TO JOHN KEMENY: "Meinem lieben Kemeny/ A. Einstein 50". "In 1943, Kemeny entered Princeton University where he studied mathematics and philosophy, but he took a year off during his studies to work on the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where his boss was Richard Feynman. He also worked there with John von Neumann. Returning to Princeton, Kemeny graduated with an A.B. in mathematics in 1946 after completing a senior thesis, titled 'Equivalent logical systems', under the supervision of Alonzo Church. He then remained at Princeton to pursue graduate studies and received a Ph.D. in mathematics in 1949 after completing a doctoral dissertation, titled 'Type-theory vs. set-theory', also under the supervision of Alonzo Church. He worked as Albert Einstein's mathematical assistant during graduate school" (Wikipedia article on John Kemeny). "At age 22, a year before he earned his Ph.D., Kemeny became Albert Einstein's mathematical assistant. I once asked him why Dr. Einstein, of all people, needed a mathematician. With that gentle, mustached smile, John said, 'Einstein wasn't very good at math' (Campion, "True Basic. A Sketch of John Kemeny for the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine"; a .pdf of this article can be found online). "People would ask did you know enough physics to help Einstein? My standard line was: Einstein did not need help in physics. But contrary to popular belief, Einstein did need help in mathematics. By which I do not mean that he wasn't good at mathematics. He was very good at it, but he was not an up-to-date research level mathematician. His assistants were mathematicians for two reasons. First of all, in just ordinary calculations, anybody makes mistakes. There were many long calculations, deriving one formula from another to solve a differential equation. They go on forever. Any number of times we got the wrong answer. Sometimes one of us got the wrong answer, sometimes the other. The calculations were long enough that if you got the same answer at the end, you were confident. So he needed an assistant for that, and, frankly, I was more up-to-date in mathematics than he was" (ask me for the source of this quote and I will tell you). A biography of John Kemeny was published in 2019: John G. Kemeny and Dartmouth College: The Man, the Times, and the College Presidency by Stephen Nelson. The book incorporates material from Kemeny's unpublished autobiography and includes a couple pages on how Kemeny became Einstein's mathematical assistant and their interaction when he was. NOTE: I am offering the trade edition of Albert Einstein: Philosopher-Scientist. There was also a limited and signed edition published in 1949 of 760 copies. Given the celebrity of Einstein, copies of the limited and signed edition always seem to be available (as I write this, six such copies are for sale online). They are nicely done, with the top edge gilt, and with a slipcase, so they are more sumptuous than the trade edition, and with the limited and signed edition of this book, you know you have a genuine Einstein signature. BUT: There is nothing personal about these copies (in rare instances Einstein did add a personal inscription to a limited and signed copy). So aside from differences in condition, these 760 copies are identical (unless you think a copy with a lower number is better than one with a higher number). The copy of the trade edition I am offering is in a very different category, because it was inscribed, and given personally, by Einstein to the recipient. And the recipient was someone who mattered to him. John Kemeny was a graduate student at Princeton when he became Einstein's mathematical assistant. This copy was Einstein's gift to "my dear Kemeny". The fact that John Kemeny went on to fame. Signed by Author(s).
