Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. 1st printing of the first American hardcover edition of the author's first novel and first book published in the U.S. It is SIGNED by London on the title page in black ink and bears a significant authorial inscription, which reads "To Alice Munro, with deepest gratitude," and the inscription is dated in October 2006. It was 2006 when Canadian author Alice Munro published her story collection, The View from Castle Rock, so it's likely the two writers met that fall at a literary festival in Canada. Until Gilgamesh, Joan London was known as a writer of short fiction, and short fiction is Nobel Prizewinner Alice Munro's stock and trade. So, the inscription offers a snapshot of the meeting between two fellow writers who admired each other's work. Gilgamesh was published five years prior to the meeting between the two authors, and this is the American edition. If this book was the Canadian edition and published in 2006, it could be argued that Munro was simply given the book by her publisher in anticipation of the meeting. Instead, the implication is that Munro owned this copy. This is a tight example, and the jacket is bright, crisp and price intact. The heel and crown of the book's spine have softened, but this is a trifle, and there is a slight bruise to the bottom corner of the front board. There is a very short, horizontal crease in the top edge of the back panel, near the fore-edge. Canadian orders will be charged GST. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 2nd printing of the first Canadian hardcover edition SIGNED by the author on a McClelland & Stewart bookplate affixed to the half-title page. A pleasing copy. The book is tight and sits squarely, and the exposed page edges are clean. The heel and crown of the book's spine have softened. Ghost of pencil erasure top edge of front free endpaper. There is what appears to be a thin smear of glue on the surface of the front board that runs the width of the board. No discoloration - it's unobtrusive but it's there. The white jacket is bright, crisp and price intact. The content of the jacket is identical to the one issued with the first printing. See our ABE Storefront to browse our catalogue of books autographed by Alice Munro. Canadian orders will be charged GST. Signed by Author(s).
