Signed presentation from Ankenbrand on the front endpaper: "For S. Gertrude Schell, artist, teacher & friend from her pupil, Frank Ankenbrand Jr. Oct. 21-1930. Phila. Penn." Susan Gertrude Schell (1891-1970) was an American painter and educator. She taught at the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art from 1930 through 1960. Schell was a member of the Philadelphia Ten- a group of female artists from the United States who exhibited together from 1917 to 1945. The group exhibited annually in Philadelphia and later had traveling exhibitions at museums throughout the East Coast and the Midwest.
