Its discontinuance lead William's Ayres (1815-1875; nurseryman, specialist in Pelargoniums; holder of patents for hot houses ) and Thomas Moore (1821 - 1887 gardener of Regents Park, London 1844-1847; curator of the Botanic Garden, Chelsea from 1848; author of many books on ferns and orchids and botany) to launch the Gardeners' Magazine of Botany. This rare magazine was superbly presented and only ran from January 1850 to December 1851. Its aim was to furnish the amateur and professional gardener with trustworthy information on subjects connected with the science of his art. A higher objective was aimed at the physiological principles on which the gardening art was founded. In the concluding remarks of 1851, the authors state that "the ground they had taken had been too high and that they had overlooked that the professional gardeners to whom the publication was principally addressed did not always possess the monthly half crown to meet the price of the periodical. Also that those seeking scientific information and technical botany are more limited in number than anticipated." As a result, the publication terminated in December 1851. It was beautifully illustrated with primarily coloured full page plates primarily of flowers but also including fruits (5 coloured full page plates) and insects (2 coloured full page plates). There were also 11 superb full page uncoloured drawings of ferns. The text was profusely illustrated with many excellent and varied wood engravings including plants, garden layouts, garden features and garden structures. This superb set has been in my private collection for many years and is amongst my favourites. It is now available because it has been replaced by another set in similar condition but in even more spectacular contemporary full leather binding. Detailed Condition Statement: Matching full leather contemporary bindings with minor professional refurbishment - bound in 3 volumes. 5 raised bands bound by Culkin and Budd - Booksellers to her Majesty, 18 Pall Mall. 4 gilt motifs on spine plus 2 gilt titles. Gilt lining to both front and rear boards of all volumes plus blind stamped decoration. All bindings tight and sound. Gilt finish to all edges of boards. Crisp corners to all boards and pages. No bumping. All page edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. No inscriptions. Volume I: January to June 1850. Coloured full page frontis designed by H. N. Humphries followed by half title and full title. 34 full page coloured plates of flowers plus 2 of insects featuring 11 insects in total and 127 superb wood engravings. Light spotting to plain endpapers preceding frontis. A few very light marks on frontis. Light marks on preface and ind. Bookseller Inventory # 010774

Book Description: Philip Wilson Publishers, London, 1986. Couverture rigide. Book Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. 1ère Édition. 365 x 260 Mm. Regina Krahl John Ayers (Editor) Beautifully produced, this set presents one of the largest and most important collections of its kind in the world, offering a complete and definitive catalogue in which every piece is itemised. Includes some 4,500 pieces dating from the Yuan and Ming dynasties, and a further 5,500 from the Qing. Three volumes, in individual slipcases. 1384 pages, 200 colour and 4800 mono illustrations, cloth, 365 x 260mm - NO JACKET -View sample pages 3.250.00 Euro The Topkapi Saray Museum's collection of Chinese ceramics is one of the world's largest and most important, yet comparatively little of it has ever been published. The wares assembled here present a continuous review of porcelains made for export from the 13th to the 19th century which, in its range of styles and designs, is without equal in any other surviving collection. Please note, price does not include postage, this will need to be paid for separately. These books are very heavy, and postage will vary according to your location. With some 4,500 pieces dating from the Yuan and Ming dynasties, and a further 5,500 from the Qing, the present three-volume set covering the entire collection constitutes the most extensively illustrated work on Chinese ceramics yet published and provides an unrivalled source of dating and the study of design. The main part of the work consists of a complete and definitive catalogue in which every piece is itemised. Each entry is accompanied by one or more monochrome illustrations, scaled in size according to importance, and many are also shown in color. In all therefore, there are over 4,800 illustrations, of which 200 are large-size color plates. The volumes divide the catalogue into three major sections, 'Celadon Wares,' 'Yuan and Ming Porcelains,' and 'Qing Porcelains.' These sections and their sub-divisions are arranged chronologically and are prefaced by extensive explanatory introductions by Regina Krahl and John Ayers. The first volume is introduced by a series of essays surveying the background to the collection and various aspects of the ceramics themselves. Dr Unsal Yucel, Head of Research at the Topkapi Saray and Lecturer in the Department of Fine Arts at Istanbul University, and Dr Julian Raby, Fellow in Islamic Studies at St, Hugh's College, Oxford, throw new light on how porcelains both entered and left the palace, by what routes, in what quantities and at what dates. Dr Raby also contributes a penetrating examination of the nature of Ottoman taste in this field, showing how porcelain was regarded at the Court. Further important articles examine in detail the use of Chinese and Arabic marks on the porcelains. A concordance, full working bibliography and a thorough index complete the work. Regina Krahl spent over a year cataloging the Chinese ceramics at the Topkapi Saray. She has done extensive work on Chinese esport ceramics in museums in Japan and South-East Asia and has been a researcher for Sotheby's. She has also prepared a catalogue of the Evelyn de Rothschild Collection of Chine ceramics at Ascott. Nurdan Erbahar is Curator of Chinese and Japanese porcelains at the Topkapi Saray, Istanbul. John Ayers is the former Keeper of the Far Eastern Department of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (1970-82). He is a well-known authority on Chinese ceramics and author of many books and catalogues on the subject. Keywords: Ceramics, China, Turkey KRAHL, R. & N. ERBAHAR, CHINESE CERAMICS IN THE TOPKAPI SARAY MUSEUM. The wares in this complete catalogue present a continuous review of porcelain made for export from the 13th to the 20th century which in it's range of styles and designs is without equal in other collections. With some 4500 pieces dating from the Yuang and Ming dynasties and 5500 from Qing this three- volume set constitutes the most extensively illustrated work on Chinese ceramics. FIRST EDITION, browned and foxed in places, pp. [viii], 198, lacking the final advertisement leaf (vestiges of), 8vo, recent half calf preserving old boards, Masonic bookplate of E.D. Bacon inside front cover, sound Philip Ayres’ last publication, rare, ‘a set of interlocking prose narratives or "novels", which set out to warn gentlemen travellers (and their guardians) of the dangers to be met with on the continent, from the "ill women" of Italy, and especially of Spain’ (ODNB). Ayres, said to have been a member of St John’s College, Oxford, had spent the early part of his career attached to Sir Richard Fanshawe’s embassy to Spain and Portugal, in the capacity of steward, and must have had first hand knowledge, or at least observation, of the ‘Subtleties, by which [the ill women] often allure Men of Eminent Quality and Parts, as well as others, into their snares, and so ruine many Noble Families.’ Though cautionary tales, they are amusingly written.ESTC records 5 copies: BL; Harvard, Yale, Texas, and the Clark. Book Description: London William S. Orr -51, 1850. First edition. Three volumes 4to., 100 fine hand-coloured lithographed plates, 11 uncoloured plates of ferns by S. Holden and C. T. Rosenberg, additional handcolored lithographed title by H. N. Humphreys in vol. 1, numerous wood-engraved text illustrations. Contemporary tan half morocco gilt, all edges gilt, spines faded, a little worn, an attractive set. A splendidly illustrated gardening magazine from the time of the Great Exhibition. Thomas Moore (1821–1887) was a British gardener and botanist and an expert on ferns and fern allies from the British Isles. The present work contains much useful information on this subject. In 1848, by the influence of Dr. John Lindley, he was appointed curator of the Apothecaries' Company's Garden at Chelsea, in succession to Robert Fortune, an appointment which gave him leisure for other work. Under Moore's tenure during the period of so-called "pteridomania" or fern-fever, the garden increased the number of fern species cultivated there by fifty percent and was renamed the Chelsea Physic Garden in 1875. He remained at Chelsea for the rest of his life. Moore spent much of his time on horticultural journalism. Apart from the present work he published the Garden Companion and Florists' Guide in 1852, the Floral Magazine in 1860–61, the Gardeners' Chronicle from 1866 to 1882 (with Lindley), the Florist and Pomologist from 1868 to 1874, and the Orchid Album from 1881 to 1887. Book Description: Britton & Rey, San Francisco, 1855. First edition of this first lithograph devoted to the Big Trees. A second edition was published around 1857 listing only Haynes as proprietor. Tinted lithograph; 25 1/4 x 18 inches (plus margins), bearing eight compartmented views each with short descriptive text. A couple of faint and small old stains, in offensive brown line of age down center. Matted, framed and glazed. A very good copy of this important lithograph.Artist Thomas Ayres arrived in San Francisco in 1849 along with thousands of other argonauts. He spent the first year in the Sierra Nevada mining region and in 1850 returned to San Francisco with many sketches of that area. For the next few years Ayers travelled to and sketched other parts of California. In 1855 James Mason Hutchings, whose name would soon become almost synonymous with Yosemite, asked Ayres to accompany him on his very first trip to Yosemite. Hutchings, Ayers and two others arrived in the valley in June of 1855. They spent five days there with Ayers sketching most of the time. The three most enduring results of this trip were a painting of Yosemite Valley that Ayers exhibited in McNulty's Hall in Sacramento in 1855, a lithograph entitled 'Yo-Hamite Falls' (the first published view of Yosemite Valley to reach the general public), and this lithograph of the Calaveras Big Tree Grove.Currey & Kruska #4.
