Knopf title - "First Edition" stated is 1st printing, Signed with box # and Nairobi on front end paper then Inscribed - Signed and Dated on the half title page with a red ink full left hand print covering the bottom of these two pages pointing to the inscription, also 1/2 of a left hand palm print in black at bottom center of rear panel dj covering the bar code, the word "best" was corrected to "beast" at the bottom of page 156 in the same ink and style as the signings - though the "a" was inserted in the wrong spot between the s and t, the book was produced to look aged with false foxing stains on interior pages and the outside of the dj - I compared this to an un-signed copy I have, slightest of wear to dj, no reason to doubt the prints belonging to the author as the inscription begins very warmly "Special Delivery,". Item Description: San Francisco, CA: Chronicle Books, 1990. Soft cover. Book Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 260 pages. Published in 1990. The artist/photographer's book-length account on subject. One of the greatest documentary photography books of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in this New And Revised Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a very small and limited first print run in both Hardcover and Softcover Editions. The Revised Edition is now rare. Presents, in a faithfully re-produced volume, Peter Beard's sequel to his masterpiece, "The End of The Game" (1965). As the poetic title suggests, Peter Beard and Alistair Graham recount their intrepid, often "intimate" (their word), and often near-fatal encounters with the man-eating crocodile, particularly those who lie in wait in Kenya's Lake Rudolf. The self-portrait of Peter Beard writing on the ground while most of his body is seemingly swallowed up by a crocodile is world-famous, one of the few iconic photographs that people who do not particularly care about photography have seen, know, and can now photo-shop. Beard's documentary work on the irreversible devastation of the African continent was pioneering and ground-breaking. He was fortunate enough to see, as a young man of 21, the Africa that no longer exists today, an extinction that he prophesied more than fifty years ago. Beard's African romance began in America, when he first read and fell under the spell of Isak Dinesen's "Out of Africa" (1938), one of the greatest books of the 20th century, and it is impossible to think of his work without Dinesen's literary masterpiece in mind. When NASA was asked by the United States Government to send just one book to join the other earthly artifacts on "The Voyager", the time capsule flown infinitely into outer space and Man's most quixotic (but deeply moving) quest to reach out to other possible beings in the universe, they chose Peter Beard's "The End of The Game". "The best book on crocodiles ever published" (The Chicago Tribune). An absolute "must-have" title for Peter Beard collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and inscribed in blue pen across the title page by the artist/photographer: "Salaams, Peter Beard". There is no recipient named. Beard also stamped the page with his left handprint in matching blue color. Peter Beard sometimes signs with either his thumb, hand, or footprint (or all three). He has said that they are the oldest human signatures, and in his case, a gesture of his African-ness. This title is a great book. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First Edition Thus/First Printing (Softcover Edition) still available online and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Signed copies available online command thousands of dollars. Considering how special the signature is, this is a reasonable and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. 200 plates. Peter Beard's "The End of The Game" is widely regarded as one of the greatest books of the 20th century. One of the greatest living artist/photographers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER PETER BEARD TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0877015392. Signed by Author. Bookseller Inventory # 17842
