Obra valiosa e importante pelo seu conteúdo cientifico, pela coleção de estampas e por ter nas 112 páginas finais do terceiro volume um catálogo descrevendo 592 instrumentos, que Dalla Bella reuniu no laboratório de física, por ele constituído nas instalações do antigo colégio dos Jesuítas, em Coimbra e que deu origem ao Museu de Física da Universidade de Coimbra. First edition, rare, of the first manual of experimental physics published in Portugal, which collects the lessons given by the author while he was a professor at the University of Coimbra. Valuable and important work for its scientific content, the collection of prints and for having in the final 112 pages of the third volume a catalogue describing 592 instruments, which Dalla Bella gathered in the physics laboratory, which he set up in the premises of the former Jesuit college in Coimbra and which gave rise to the Physics Museum of the University of Coimbra. Dalla Bella had earlier published a work on the manufacture of olive oil - Memorias sobre o modo de aperfeiçoar a manufactura do azeite em Portugal (Coimbra, 1784) - and, finding existing agricultural manuals to be unsatisfactory, resolved to write a supplementary work on olive growing. The Memoria discusses the various kinds of olive trees, their propagation, where and how to plant and transplant olive trees, how to prune the trees and perform grafts, watering and fertilizing the trees, and the diseases to which they are subject; on pp. 161-79 is a monthly calendar summarizing what an olive grower needs to do and when. The many footnotes refer to contemporary works in French and Italian on olive growing, as well as to accounts by Roman and Greek authors. A second edition was published at Coimbra, 1818. This first edition is rare, recorded by NUC in just four American libraries; the title is not noted by Cagle in A Matter of Taste. Dalla Bella, a native of Padua, taught experimental physics at the Collegio dos Nobres in Lisbon, and later philosophy at Coimbra, finally retiring to Italy in 1823. Among his other published works is a treatise on lightning rods, Noticias historicas, e praticas acerca do modo de defender os edificios dos estragos dos raios (Lisbon, 1773). .
