Second Edition. 195 x 153 mm. (7 5/8 x 6"). 2 p.l., 120 pp.; 1 p.l., 120 pp. Contemporary stiff vellum, smooth spine with (faded) ink titling. WITH 240 WOODCUTS (120 for the Old and 120 for the New Testaments) by Christoffel van Sichem. See Lehmann-Haupt, "An Introduction to the Woodcut of the 17th Century," p. 49. â Slightly splayed, vellum a little soiled and with minor wear, but the unpretentious binding solid and perfectly okay. Faint browning and foxing because of quality of paper, but surprisingly fresh and clean for a book one would normally expect to show obvious signs of use. This is a very pleasing copy of a Dutch children's Bible, first issued in 1743, in which illustrations and rhyming verses acquaint young readers with key stories from Scripture in a format that is as pleasant as it is educational. The title here literally translates as "Biblical Pleasure Garden," and the contents bring this appellation to life. The volume's richly detailed and engrossing woodcuts are paired with both the text from the Dutch Bible and with the easier to remember rhyming verses by B. Blens, all of these elements working to interpret the Scripture in everyday language young people can understand. First appearing in a folio Bible printed in 1646, the diverting illustrations are by Christoffel van Sichem the younger (1581-1658). The son and namesake of a Dutch printmaker and publisher, Christoffel was the outstanding member of a Dutch Catholic engraving and printing dynasty that provided illustrations used in books and sold as individual prints. Although Christoffel the younger was trained by his father, Lehmann-Haupt finds that there "is a gracefulness, a narrative, illustrative inventiveness about the woodcuts of Christoffel II that surpasses the works of his father" and suggests that the son's "woodcuts, which are all cut without crosshatching, tend to run to smaller, more intimate formats" as a reflection "of the son's more bookish inclinations." The images here are full of charm and animation (for example, the household of Mary and Martha, the sisters of Lazarus, is as chaotic and lively as the domestic scenes of Dutch master Jan Steen), and they are frequently quite dramatic--the depictions of the Apocalypse no doubt inspired many childhood nightmares. The latter were based on Durer's Apocalypse series, and contain his initials as well as those of Christoffel. This work is not rare, but it is seldom encountered in decent condition, and often appears incomplete.

Printed in Dutch in double column. Printed marginalia. Few engraved or woodcut tailpieces. Period diced calf over beveled wooden boards embossed with central interlaced lozenge, brass corner pieces and hinges, but lacking clasps; (edges slightly chipped at beginning, overall toned with age some stains, some of the maps trimmed close but otherwise clean, joints splitting affecting some internal leaves, spine with minor loss, overall a historical volume with great appeal). An immense biblical tome five inches thick from cover to cover, beautifully bound, probably for a church or religious institution. Deaccessioned from the Pacific School of Religion, but with no markings other than the pictorial bookplate of John Howell, "Where there is no vision, the people perish" to front pastedown. Adolph Visscher s Dutch translation of the Luther Bible in period binding. In 1648 Adolph Visscher of the Lutheran Church in Amsterdam revised a previous Mennonite translation of Luther s German Bible. This became the standard Bible or "State Bible" (Statenbijbel) of Dutch Lutherans. This 1702 printing is a revision of Visscher s Bible translation, which was in use, occasionally revised, until 1951. Illustrated throughout with engravings by Romeyn de Hooghe of the Rubens School, the engravings represent some of the most significant for the Dutch book illustrator. This suite of illustrations was bound in a number of different translations and editions of the Bible during this period. Progress in the knowledge of biblical languages as well as the development of biblical refutation increased the demand for new versions of the Dutch Bible In fact, a Keur translation of the "States Bible" appeared this same year. This is a historical state of Visscher s Dutch "States translation," also known as the Lindenberg edition, which was in fact a universally accepted Protestant Bible, this volume maintaining the four original maps, some of the finest to appear in 18th century bibles.

[4], 312; [8], [276] ll., 71, [1] pp.A very rare edition of an eighteenth-century Dutch prayer book in a remarkable Dutch East India Company (VOC) binding. The present work includes the New Testament in the famous Dutch States translation, commissioned during the National Synod in Dordrecht in 1618-1619, the psalms in their famous 1773 State-commissioned rhyme-edition, chants, and the forms of unity (including the catechism). All psalms and chants are accompanied by musical notation. With an elaborate manuscript presentation inscription, written in Dutch in brown ink on the verso of the first free flyleaf; and some Dutch and English newspaper clippings inserted between the front endpapers. Ad 1 with a manuscript signature on the verso of the title-page beneath the small Amsterdam coat of arms beneath the "act of consent" (= privilege); ad 2 with the manuscript signature of J. J. Kessler beneath the small (but slightly more prominent) Amsterdam coat of arms beneath the 1773 "Acte van Consent" for the Psalms. Somewhat foxed throughout, the last four pages (including 3 blank flyleaves) are lightly water stained, the edges are somewhat browned. Leaf A1 in ad 2 is missing a small part of the bottom outer corner, slightly affecting the text of the printed commentary in the margins. The spine shows clear signs of use and wear, the joints are weakened but all sewing supports are still intact, the boards are slightly scuffed.
