Little has been said about Hercule Florence, his research and inventions until this presentation. A lost genius in the Sao Paulo hinterland, he was an excellent draftsman and painter and invented photography in an independent, isolated manner in 1833. According to his diary, the idea of printing by light came to him on August 15, 1832 (he was familiar with the camera obscura). His experiments are noted in 5 handwritten diaries. There are many who feel that he invented photography and never was given credit. LIMITED EDITION OF 1000.

Paperback. Condition: New.

Offering a diverse selection of photographers, countries, artistic movements, and subject matter, the shows revealed a photographic tradition rich in both history and creativity. Drawing from the more than 1,000 images exhibited by FotoFest, this book documents the work of fifty photographers from ten countries. The photographs range from the opening of the Brazilian frontier in the 1880s to documentary images from El Salvador's 1980-1992 civil war to works of specifically aesthetic and experimental intent. Many of the photographs appear here in print for the first time. Wendy Watriss's opening essay provides the curatorial overview for the book in her essay. Lois Parkinson Zamora examines some of the roots of visual imagery in Latin American cultures. An essay by Boris Kossoy addresses the history of Latin American photography in the nineteenth century, delving into the social iconography that evolved from the mingling of indigenous and European traditions. Fernando Castro covers the contemporary scene and the debate over "artistic" versus documentary work. An extensive bibliography by Marta Sanchez Philippe and artist biographies conclude the book.Contents: Acknowledgments Image and Memory: Photography from Latin America, 1866-1994 (Wendy Watriss) Photography in Nineteenth-Century Latin America: The European Experience and the Exotic Experience (Boris Kossoy) Crossover Dreams: Remarks On Contemporary Latin American Photography (Fernando Castro) PLATES Uruguay: The War of the Triple Alliance, 1865-1870 Brazil: The Opening of a Frontier, 1880-1910 Colombia: Medellin, the New City, 1897-1946 Guatemala: The Colonial Legacy, Religious Photographs, 1880-1920 Peru: Modernity in the Southern Andes: Peruvian Photography, 1908-1930 Ecuador: Old and New, 1925-1986 Argentina: A Crossing of Cultures: Four Women in Argentina, 1937-1968 Mexico: Witnesses of Time, 1987-1991: Flor Garduno Guatemala: The Imprint of Time, Nupcias de Soledad: Luis Gonzalez Palma El Salvador: In the Eye of the Beholder, The War in El Salvador, 1980-1992 Argentina and Uruguay: The Modern Landscape, 1981-1991 Brazil: Color from Brazil Brazil: Mario Cravo Neto Colombia: On the Edge, 1970-1994 Venezuela: New Visions, 1987-1990 Quetzalcoatl's Mirror: Reflections on the Photographic Image in Latin America (Lois Parkinson Zamora) Bibliography (Marta Sanchez Philippe) Artist Biographies Contributor Biographies Lenders List Index.

Illustrations. ********************** "" It is difficult to clearly portray a character who lived throughout mostof the 19th century, and who shifted between the Romantic enthusiasm of youth and the positivist scientific research that he carried out during his later years. Hercule Florence was an explorer, an inventor and an artist. Born into a Monegasque family, Hercule Florence set out for Brazil at the age of nineteen as an artist-illustrator on the Langsdorff Expedition. The aim of the trip was to explore the New World, its nature, environment and inhabitants, ones within a society yet to be built. This book aims to restore Hercule Florence's place and that of his body of work which he produced in a context of intellectual and cultural isolation in the history of scientific inventions that primed the feverish developments taking place in Europe at the time. The fruit of scientific writings and detailed archival research, this book offers an account of the extraordinary figure of Hercule Florence. Considered one of the inventors of photography as well as an accomplished draughtsman, explorer, entrepreneur and educator, he exercised his practical and intuitive intelligence in many fields, making significant contributions to each. The book's lavish iconography and documentation, most of which has never before been published, shed light on this little-known genius and his visions, which on several occasions he succeeded in transforming into reality.
