Book Description: Unpublished documents, London, 1750. No Binding. Book Condition: Very Good. A remarkable autograph collection relating to the eighteenth century man of letters and Whig politician, Horace Walpole. Walpole is now best remembered for the creation of Strawberry Hill and this collection spread over five folio sized pages of a Victorian Album comprises letters, cut signatures and envelopes relating to Walpole's family, and Strawberry Hill circle. The manuscripts are firmly mounted on large brown album pages and include forty seven items in total, mostly letter salutations and envelope fronts. A salutation and signature from Britain's first Prime Minister Robert Walpole to his son Horace is present alongside salutations from Edward Walpole and his brother Robert Walpole who became second Earl of Orford. There are fragments of correspondence between Horace Walpole and his closest friend, Henry Conway, later General Conway. These include a free franked envelope front in Walpole's hand to 'General Conway' at Park Place near Henley. A similar envelope front signed by Conway is addressed to Horace Walpole at Strawberry Hill with additional salutations from Conway and his brother the second Lord Conway. The Hellfire Club is represented with salutations and signature from Henry Selwyn. Speaker Arthur Onslow is represented in a letter front 'To the Honorable Mr Walpole' with salutations and signature from a mutual friend of Horace Walpole and Dr Johnson, Sir John Hawkins. Two of Horace Walpole's most scholarly correspondents, Conyers Middleton and Andrew Ducarel are represented alongside the Scottish poet David Mallet and his fellow countryman the portraitist Allan Ramsay as well as Robert Walpole's Secretary, Henry Bilson Legge. Among extended family members we have Maria Walpole, Duchess of Gloucester, and her daughter Elizabeth Laura Waldegrave, the subject of Gainsborough's portrait of the famously beautiful Waldegrave sisters. The artist Maria Cosway who had a brief relationship with Thomas Jefferson is present along with several unidentified letter fronts to Walpole from foreign aristocrats and the historian Catherine Macaulay. Laurence Shelley, the last peer to be hung in Britain is represented in a letter front 'To the Honble Horace Walpole' with his seal present. After his defence on a charge of murder on the ground of insanity had failed, Walpole commented: 'Lord Ferrers was not mad enough to be struck with Lady Huntingdon's sermons. The Methodists have nothing to brag of his conversion, though Whitefield prayed for him'. Other signatures and salutations include: Edward Jerningham, William Wyndham, the Shakespeare scholar Edmond Malone, General Edward Cornwallis the actors John Henderson and Kitty Clive and the publisher Josiah Boydell. The collection was put together by a member of the Lane family of Kings Bromley Hall near Lichfield during the nineteenth century. Please contact Christian White at Modernfirsteditions if you would like more information about this collection. Signed by Author(s). Bookseller Inventory # 001998
