Full Leather. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Talford -- Frontispiece (illustrator). Reissued. 600 g; VIII, 667, (1) pages, includes index of 1st lines & index of titles, bound in navy blue pebble leather, all edges gilded, with green underlay, marbled end pages, Elizabeth Barrett Browning's monogram on the front panel, title with 5 gilt decorations on the spine. place marker ribbon. What makes this copy interesting is that it has on the front free end page a hand lettered and coloured presentation plate "SRECIAL PRIZE presented to Miss Rhoda Bowley in memory of my son Reginald killed in action in France December 31, 1916" and then signed " J. E. Lindsay" "Methodist Sunday School Creswick December 1918". Reginald Lindsay was the brother of Norman. The spelling error is odd, as is the reversal of the letter Z in the word prize. There are no initials or other indication of who was responsible for decorating the bookplate. "In 1915 he returned to Creswick where he comforted his mother after the death of his father, and farewelled his younger brother Reg, who had just enlisted in the AIF. Reginald Lindsay was killed in France on 31 December 1916. It is no accident that the figure of the heroic ANZAC, so prominent in Norman Lindsay's war posters, bears a marked resemblance to photographs of Reg. BROWNING, Elizabeth Barrett (illustrator). From the Library of Elizabeth Barret Browning. The top margin of the title-page is signed by Elizabeth Moulton-Barrett, 'E.M.Barrett'. On the front free endpaper is inscribed 'This book belonged to Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Being all to pieces, tied up by strong, it was rebound by Wells, the College Bookseller, Winchester. Her signature still remains â " it was a pity, but had to be done. O. Moulton-Barrett, Southgate Hall, Winchester, 1874'. This book is listed in Kelley & Coley, number A1440. Browning's copy of this second edition. Octavo (7 3/4 x 4 7/8 inches; 197 x 124 mm). It is quite rare to find books from her personal library. Browning was a scholar of Ancient Greek studies and ost likely used this present copy in her studies and as reference when writing her translation of Prometheus Bound, Essays on the Greek Christian Poets and the English Poets, as well as her series of poems retelling the story of Metamorphoses by Apuleius about the lovers Cupid and Psyche. Framed Letter. Handwritten letter SIGNED "Elizabeth B. Browning" on a 3-3/8" x 5-1/4" sheet of paper matted and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 10-1/2" x 8-1/4". Browning has written "43 Bocca di Leone" as a return address. The letter is addressed to a Miss Shepard. In part: "I send the beef-tea, & will you let me know tomorrow when more shall be wanted -- & whether the gelatina made of chicken would be a desirable change?-- Use me, I beg of you-- I do congratulate you all, out of a full heart--." A postscript: "One word of verbal message to say how she is today." An interesting insight into the domestic side of the famous poet. EBB to Ada Shepard (4382), as published in THE BROWNINGS' CORRESPONDENCE, 26, 117, where the date is given as Sunday [?10] [April 1859: "Conjectural date suggested by EBB's references to easily digestible food, doubtless for Una Hawthorne"; and the text is taken from AAA's (American Art Association) Catalogue, 6 May 1915. Light spotting to letter, some soiling at very bottom of letter covering up part of the words of the postscript. Letter examined out of frame and no other defects observed. Very Good.

Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Edith Marion Story, from her affectionate friend, Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Rome - Dec 26 - 59." Edith Story (1844-1907) was the daughter and youngest child of the expatriate American sculptor, lawyer and author, William Wetmore Story, who was the subject of a 1903 biography by Henry James entitled WILLIAM WETMORE STORY AND HIS FRIENDS. Among the closest of those friends were the Brownings. Elizabeth, in particular, was especially grateful to 15-year-old Edith for the generosity and kindness she showed the Brownings' son, Pen, barely 10 years old at the time his mother gave this book to her. Edith later married Simone de Peruzzi de' Medici, and became a writer. OCLC 2673701 Full contemporary vellum, gilt spine with red leather label.
