Book Description: London: The Octagon Press Ltd. FIRST EDITION THUS, 1st impression. 1974., 1974. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 128 pages. 12mo (7 1/2 by 5 inch) hardcover with d/j. * Some light rubbing to d/j (now protected in a removable mylar sleeve), faint image of a small sticker once on the front pastedown, some slight bowing of boards, o/w FINE CONDITION IN FINE D/J. *** Burton (1821-1890) was a now legendary Victorian explorer. He was the first European to visit, disguised as an Arab, the forbidden cities of Mecca and Medina. He was also the discoverer and first translator of the Tantric sex manual the Kama Sutra and produced a complete and massive 17 volume translation of the Arabian Nights. There is still some dispute about whether this present volume, a distillation of Sufic doctrines, was really a translation or a disguised original work by Burton himself. *** Looking at the text of this Octagon edition, it is obviously a facsimile of a late 19th or early 20th century edition, though this isn't stated or attributed. *** A LOVELY COPY OF THIS SCARCE OCTAGON EDITION. *~*~* REDUCED SHIPPING AVAILABLE FOR THIS LIGHTER THAN STANDARD BOOK. Book Description: Alfred A. Knopf, NY, 1942. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Wilfred Jones (illustrator). 1st Edition. 1942 Knopf Stated 2nd printing of the 1924 edition. This is a very peculiar copy--in VG/Fair condition. The HB is clean and tight with minor wear at the bumps at the corners and some yellowing of the end pages and edges. On the rear of the half-title pages the books of Khalil Gibran are listed through 1934. The price-clipped DJ shows the correct info but the inside front leaf is blank while the rear shows a $ 2.50 price and gives an explanation of Gibran's The Prophet. We think as this was printed during wartime perhaps Knopf combined 2 different book DJs? Any other explanations are welcome! The DJ is missing a piece on the spine affecting the JI and ABDU of the title. There is minor darkening of the front and rear covers and more significant darkening along the spine. A most curious book!. Bookseller Inventory # 008167

Book Description: David McKay, Philadelphia, 1931. Hardback. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No dust jacket. Willy Pogany (illustrator). First edition. David McKay Company, Philadelphia, 1931. First edition. Book condtiion: very good. Very minor shelf wear to head & tail of spine and slight bumping to corners. Pages lightly tanned. Neat ink inscription on ffep. Very sound binding. No dust jacket. Book bound in black cloth with pictorial paste down to front. Some slight attrition to edges & coners of the paste down. Silver borders and silver titles to spine. Burton's Kasidah is the only poetical work of is kind in the English language. It is not a creative translation like the Rubaiyat but a direct creation. The word Kasidah can be translated variously but in this context is probably best as Testament and it is full of the pessimism and fatalism born of science. Burton was a scholar and a poet and the Kasidah is his life-philosophy. It is a unique work that deserves to be more widely read. The book has an introduction written by Dhan Gopal Murkerji and twelve full page b&w illustrations by Willy Pogany. Book. Bookseller Inventory # 01302536
