Item Description: Pogany, Willy (illustrator). Translated and Annotated by His Friend and Pupil Sir Richard Burton. Introduction by Dhan Gopal Mukerji. Illustrated by Willy Pogany. Philadelphia: David McKay Company (1931). Quarto, black cloth stamped in silver and with gravure illustration by Pogany inset on front cover. 129 pages, with thirteen full page gravure illustrations by Willy Pogany. A very good copy of the First Pogany-illustrated edition, but lacking the original dust wrapper. Willy Pogany (1882-1955) was born in Hungary, where he studied engineering at the University of Budapest He abandoned his studies of engineering and traveled to Paris where he did caricatures for the periodicals, and then to London in 1906 to pursue a career in illustration. He seems to have enjoyed instant success with his first commission "The Adventures of a Dodo," followed by the "Welsh Fairy Book," "Rime of the Ancient Mariner," "Tannhauser," and "Arabian Nights," In 1915 he came to America and continued with success in the field of book illustration, while also designing murals and stage settings, and the interiors of several large hotels. His technique was essentially decorative, much like his contemporary, Dulac, and exerted a distinct influence upon pictorial and decorative art. The Kasidah is a philosophic poem that begins with a vivid description of the desert and a waking caravan, proceeds to an exposition of the brevity of man's life and the senseless cruelty which has marked our evolution, and moves finally to the conclusion: "That man must forever be willing to learn, to know and to unknow; that reason must be his arbiter; that self-salvation through self-expression must be his goal; and finally that of life's two possible paths, it is not 'the primrose path' of dalliance but the one leading to daily battle with ignorance that is worthy of man's journeying." The poem was actually not a translation at all, but written by Burton himself, and originally printed by Quaritch in an edition of 100 copies in 1880. Bookseller Inventory # 9442

Item Description: David McKay, Philadelphia, 1931. Hardback. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No dust jacket. Willy Pogany (illustrator). First edition. David McKay Company, Philadelphia, 1931. First edition. Book condtiion: very good. Very minor shelf wear to head & tail of spine and slight bumping to corners. Pages lightly tanned. Neat ink inscription on ffep. Very sound binding. No dust jacket. Book bound in black cloth with pictorial paste down to front. Some slight attrition to edges & coners of the paste down. Silver borders and silver titles to spine. Burton's Kasidah is the only poetical work of is kind in the English language. It is not a creative translation like the Rubaiyat but a direct creation. The word Kasidah can be translated variously but in this context is probably best as Testament and it is full of the pessimism and fatalism born of science. Burton was a scholar and a poet and the Kasidah is his life-philosophy. It is a unique work that deserves to be more widely read. The book has an introduction written by Dhan Gopal Murkerji and twelve full page b&w illustrations by Willy Pogany. Hardback. Bookseller Inventory # 01302536
