As an award~winning CBS News reporter, Dozier had devoted her career to being in the right place at the right time to capture the story. Suddenly, in the wrong place at the worst time, she became the story, as a deadly explosion tore through her team and word spread worldwide. That Memorial Day in 2006, a routine mission ended with Dozier in a pool of blood on a Baghdad street, a victim of a car bomb that killed cameraman Paul Douglas and soundman James Brolan as well as Captain James Alex Funkhouser and his translator. Critically injured, Dozier woke to find herself fighting first for survival, then for recovery, and finally to return to her career. Breathing the Fire tracks one woman's relentless determination to get the story, to get it right, and to get well again after everything went wrong. In vivid and unapologetic detail, she recounts the moments from bomb to rescue to the waves of pain that spread from that Baghdad blast to homes and families around the world, now linked by an event horribly commonplace for U.S. troops and Iraqis alike. Covering events in the Middle East as a foreign correspondent for CBS News, Kimberly Dozier earned a reputation for being on top of the news, from disputed territories of Israel to the war in Afghanistan and the hunt for Osama bin Laden. She reported on the war in Iraq from 2003 until she was injured by a car bomb in 2006. Previously she was London bureau chief and chief European correspondent for CBS Radio News as well as a television reporter for CBS News. She covered world events ranging from the crisis in the Balkans to the death of Princess Diana. In the 1990s Dozier was an anchor for BBC Radio World Service's ''World Update" and, while living in Cairo, did freelance reporting for The Washington Post, The San Francisco Chronicle, and other news media. She has received four prestigious Gracie Awards from American Women in Radio and Television including the Grand Gracie Award in 2007 for her body of work in Iraq. A seasoned traveler since childhood, Dozier has a home in Jerusalem and is eager to return to reporting the news in the Middle East.

Book
2004 reprint by N & M Press (original 1894). SB. xi + 316pp with b/w illus and 4 maps A vividly topical eye-witness account of a key episode in the long struggle between Islam and Christendom. The author reported the 1877 war between the Russian and Ottoman Turk empires that resulted in a Russian victory and the establishment of Bulgaria after centuries of Turkish rule from both sides of the lines. Written some two decades later, this book gives an unsparing narrative of a war correspondentā s war, complete with many fine - some of them gruesome - illustrations and battle maps showing the fall of Plevna. The tone and style of the book is that of a graphic Victorian journalist rather than an objective historian, but it is none the worse for that, and gives the reader a good idea of the endemic religious and ethnic hatreds that still trouble the Balkans to this very day.

hardcover, 6½" x 9½", with dust jacket 288 pages From the bloody battles of race to the mysteries of fading tribal cultures; from secret guerrilla wars to the hushed gardens of a dying colonial world, Alan Cowell gives us a portrait of a continent in startling images. He goes behind the lines we've never crossed: flying in ancient Dakotas to guerrilla outposts; hiding out in townships; filing stories by carrier pigeon from frontlines; weaving together the myriad contradictions, beauties and cruelties of a place more fascinating than any other. VERY GOOD book in VERY GOOD unclipped dust jacket.

Manuscript / Paper Collectible
An interesting letter regarding a celebrated Victorian scandal. In 1884 Frederic had come to England with his wife and five children as the London correspondent of the New York TImes. He set up a second household with Kate Lyon, with whom he had a further three children. Lyons was a Christian Scientist, and when Frederic suffered a stroke in 1898, she tried to cure him by faith healing, but he died. At the instigation of Mrs Frederic, Lyon was tried for manslaughter, but was acquitted. 3pp., 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. In good condition, lightly-aged, with minor traces of two tissue mounts. She begins by stating that his letter has remained unanswered due to '[h]ealth which is not very strong and an unusual pressure of letters'. She is 'somewhat puzzled what to say', but while contributing five guineas, does not wish to be put on the committee of the fund 'for poor Mrs. Frederic & her children'. She concludes: 'I much admired some sides of Mr. Frederic's talent, but circumstances disclosed at the inquest were very painful, and my mind is so far from clear on the whole subject that I should prefer not to be on the Committee'. A postscript regarding the making out of the cheque for five guineas is in another hand. Loosely inserted is a slip of paper with a manuscript note (by Fisher?) regarding the author of the letter. From a batch of papers received by Fisher in connection with the fund.
