TWO VOLUMES. 10 x 6.5 inches. Unpaginated. [c.270 pp. letterpress]. Bound in blue buckram, gilt. A little wear to extremities, but otherwise a very good set. Illustrated by 2 portrait frontispieces, by 88 colour plates, including 9 folding, and by numerous engraved text figures. Decorated by title page vignettes. William Curtis (1746-1799) first came to the public's attention with the publication of the part work Flora Londinensis, which, while being well-received, did not bring him much financial reward. He pursued another more successful course in his career until he responded to 'repeated solicitations of several ladies and gentlemen for a work in which Botany and Gardening, or the labours of Linnaeus and Miller might happily be combined.' Curtis duly obliged and The Botanical Magazine first appeared in 1787. Its superb, hand-coloured plates made it highly desirable in fashionable society and it brought him lasting acclaim. These volumes, containing plates 89-175 were originally issued in parts, 1950-51; the title page and preliminaries for Vol. 168 appear after Plate 165 in the second bound volume. Edited by the botanist, William Bertram Turrill (1890-1961). The Magazine is now published by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
