Item Description: Forgotten Books, United States, 2015. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 229 x 152 mm. Language: English Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from An Essay on the Physiology of Mind: An Interpretation Based on Biological, Morphological, Physical and Chemical Considerations In this essay the writer has endeavored to present the basic facts of those reactions of the organism to the environment which under given conditions manifest the qualities which we speak of as mind. As far as possible elemental truths have been sought in a consideration of the structure of the constituent substance of the organism, the living protoplasm. The physical peculiarities of the latter, its ceaseless chemical change, its simultaneous up-building and reduction, its reactions and its lack of reactions to the incident forces of the physical world, have, in turn, been called to the attention of the reader. Secondly, the behavior of simple unicellular forms of life has been compared with and in a measure correlated with the behavior of the individual cells of multi-cellular forms. In due course, also, have been considered those peculiarities of structure of the living protoplasm which cause the arrest of certain, a very limited number, of the incident forces of the environment; protoplasm as a whole is transparent to and remains totally unaffected by an infinitude of forces active in the universe. Item Description: Forgotten Books, United States, 2015. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 229 x 152 mm. Language: English Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from Rest, Suggestion: And Other Therapeutic Measures in Nervous and Mental Diseases The within volume was originally written by the author for the System of Physiologic Therapeutics edited by Dr. S. Solis-Cohen and in which system it appeared as Volume VIII. The present edition has been largely rewritten and revised. Such modifications and additions have been made as the advance in our knowledge has made desirable. As before, emphasis has been laid upon simple physiologic methods of treatment; such as, rest, feeding and psychotherapy. In order that the principles underlying the application of these methods should be clearly appreciated, the author has unfolded, in as systematic a manner as possible, the problems presented by the exercise of function, rest and the various fatigue states. As before he has adopted a purely clinical interpretation of the neuroses, a clear comprehension of which is an indispensable preliminary to intelligent and successful treatment. Attention is particularly called to the interpretation of simple neurasthenia as a fatigue neurosis and to the important distinction existing between the latter and psychasthenia; also, to the lines of differentiation that must be drawn between both of these affections and hysteria and hypochondria; and, finally, to the undeniable claims of both of the latter to independent positions in our nosology. Throughout, in discussing the treatment of nervous and mental diseases, the author has, to repeat, laid stress upon physiologic measures. He has, however, described in detail and, when necessary, has emphasized, purely medical treatment; as, for example, in the sections on tabes and paresis. In every instance, due consideration has been given to medicines, but, on the whole, these have been assigned a secondary importance. In the third part of the volume the author has presented the subject of psychotheiapy under the general caption of suggestion. Here the object has been to separate the chaff from the wheat. Item Description: Forgotten Books, United States, 2015. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 229 x 152 mm. Language: English Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from A Clinical Manual of Mental Diseases The generous reception accorded the first edition of this manual justifies the inference that a purely clinical presentation of mental disease fulfils a distinct want. The practising physician has too often looked upon insanity as a subject unattractive and obscure, difficult and abstruse, and with which, because of the speculative and metaphysical character of its theories and explanations, he has no immediate concern. The truth is, however, that when viewed from the standpoint of internal medicine it is brought into close and intimate relations with the latter. This becomes especially evident when we realize that many cases of mental disease have their origin in infections and intoxications, while others present problems which are essentially those of disorders of metabolism. Many of the latter have to do with profound nutritional disturbances which have their origin in defensive reactions of the organism to intoxications. Such intoxications may arise from without or, it may be, from within the organism. Among the latter are toxic states due to abnormalities of the various glands of internal secretion or of other structures. In other cases of mental disease, again, the physician has to do with aberrancies and arrests of development, with peculiarities of structure and mental organization often hereditary; and in each of these there are, again, the added and largely unsolved problems of toxic metabolism. Finally, in given instances, the mental symptoms are in relation with gross visceral or bodily disease. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
