Item Description: SEUSS,DR. THE CAT IN THE HAT. NY:Random Hse. (1957). 8vo, flat paper over boards (not glazed paper), 61p., Fine in very sl. worn dust wrapper with price intact. 1st edition of Seuss's first reader (correct binding paper and price), SOLD WITH A FINE LARGE COLOR DRAWING OF THE CAT IN THE HAT SIGNED "BEST WISHES! DR. SEUSS". The drawing is 11 1/4" high by 7" wide incl. the inscription, done on fine quality art paper. It is executed in red and black ink with a lot of detail. The 2 are housed in a custom leather backed slipcase. The original price of this book is the cause of considerable confusion. This first reader was originally published at $2.00. When the publishers decided to make a series of beginning readers, they priced all of them at $1.95 and lowered the price of this title to conform, thus the price of this book went down instead of up as time went by. Illustrated in bright color throughout. In addition to becoming a household name, the Cat In The Hat is extremely important in the history of education and children's literature. At the same time that it was amusing, it was bringing the basic concepts of reading to tens of thousands of little children who were learning without being "taught". It was a marked departure from the boring Dick and Jane type reader. The challenge of writing an entire book using only 220 different words and making the book enjoyable was enormous. Teachers began to use this book in their classrooms and it was not long before the Cat In The Hat became an American icon. A great item. Bookseller Inventory # 32429

Item Description: Random House, New York, 1957. First edition, first printing with all issue points: Cat in the Hat on back cover of book with 14 titles (up to now) listed on the rear flap and a list of 13 books printed at the end of the book. Dust jacket price reads 250/250. Inscribed twice by Dr. Seuss to the same recipient, "For Juanito with Best Wishes- Dr. Seuss." Dr. Seuss has signed on the verso of the front free endpaper and the verson of the half title page. Illustrated in black and red. Original illustrated glossy paper boards, pictorial endpapers. Very good with some rubbing to the boards as usual, expert restoration to a tear in the rear endpaper in a very good dust jacket. "Clearly the Grinch has been the most memorable Christmas villain to undergo redemption since Ebenezer Scrooge. To some degree, Ted identified with the Grinch When asked why he wrote the book, Dr. Seuss replied, 'I was brushing my teeth on the morning of the 26th of last December when I noted a very Grinch-ish countenance in the mirror. It was Seuss! So I wrote the story about my sour friend, the Grinch, to see if I could rediscover something about Christmas that obviously I'd lost.' It was no coincidence that, when the book appeared in 1957, the Grinch complained, 'For fifty-three years I've put up with it now ' Ted, of course, was born in 1904 After The Cat in the Hat and The Grinch, Ted's reputation grew exponentially" (Cohen, 329-30). Item Description: Random House, 1947. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. DR. SEUSS (illustrator). 1st Edition. This listing is for the extremely scarce ASSOCIATION/PRESENTATION book, SIGNED and INSCRIBED with an ORIGINAL DRAWING by Dr. Seuss. FIRST STATE of the first printing for McElligot's Pool, by Dr. Seuss dated 1947. First State points include the open mouth fish on the front boards, first state boards in the bright kelly green cloth, 7 lines copyright notice with no other dates included, and 250/250 price on the dust jacket. The book has light green cloth with navy blue titles to the front and spine. Flying fish with open mouth to front board. The book is in beautiful condition for this title which is often found with scribbles, writing, ruined spines and other issues that revolve around first edition children's books. This copy has no edgewear and internally is very clean and crisp. Touch of very slight fading or toning to the boards. The binding is tight and square. The decorative end papers are clean with strong vibrant colors with no owner names, no inscriptions and no bookplates. The internal pages are unusually clean for a children's book with no writing, no stains, no bent pages, no stickers, no rips, no handling marks and no foxing. Beautiful overall bright copy of a children's book in hard to find condition. The book was signed and inscribed by Dr. Seuss, including an original drawing of a fish, to Woody Dike. Woody Dike is the son of California painter Phil Dike who was a very close, long time personal friend of Dr. Seuss. The book comes with impeccible provenance as it was acquired from the auction house who sold on behalf of the personal collection of Woodward Dike. The book will come with the bill of sale and the lot description. It is extremely rare to locate a signed book or a piece of artwork to someone with a close personal relationship with Dr. Seuss. The original unrestored slightly nicked dust jacket is in beautiful condition with just a bit of nicks or edgewear to the extremities. Otherwise the jacket has strong, vibrant colors with no rips, no chips, no tears, no rubbing, no fading, no stains, and no foxing. The jacket is NOT price clipped and has a stated price of 250/250. Please see detailed images. A stunning, highly unique handsome example of this extremely scarce Dr. Seuss title in beautiful clean collectible condition. ADDITIONAL IMAGES AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Item Description: SEUSS,DR. AND TO THINK THAT I SAW IT ON MULBERRY STREET. NY: Vanguard Press (1937 Second printing). 4to (8 1/2 x 11"), pictorial boards, Fine in dust wrapper (Marco's shorts are blue on dw and book). This is a remarkable copy with none of the edge wear usually found and with just a touch of toning on the white paper spine. The dust wrapper has minimal soil and a few small tears but is one of the nicest we've seen. This was Seuss' first book for children, brightly illustrated in full color and this copy is SIGNED BY SEUSS (on verso of free endpaper). It's interesting that by the second printing the price on the dust wrapper had already gone up to $1.25 from the original $1.00. If you can't buy a first printing, this is a great alternative to add to a Seuss collection. Bookseller Inventory # 7787
