Book Description: The Liberator Publishing Company, New York, 1924. Soft cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Hugo Gellert, Fred Ellis, Maurice Becker, Robert Minor, Adolph Dehn (illustrator). First Edition. Quarto. New York: The Liberator Publishing Company, 1924. First Edition. The May, 1924 issue. Volume 5, serial number 74. Cover art by famed long-time contributor Hugo Gellert. By this time, the credited editor was Robert Minor, with Max Eastman listed as an associate editor. Quarto, illustrated stapled wraps, 34 pp. Very Good Plus by any periodical standard; and, certainly, if the fragile Liberator magazine is given any leeway, Near Fine by its own standards. Virtually nothing to point out but trace micro-edgewear, very modest age toning at covers. Front cover shows a small chip, lower right. Please see scans. The page block itself does of course show some age toning, but it is supple and un-chipped. The May, 1924 issue of the famed and seminal creation of Max Eastman and his sister Crystal Eastman, with which they picked up the flag from The Masses, which had been shut down by the U.S. Government on the basis of postal regulations. A socialist publication like The Masses, The Liberator had, in addition to ideological commentary, a variety of art, poetry and short fiction, including many covers and other interior artwork by a number of talented artists - in this issue, no less than noted regulars Hugo Gellert, Fred Ellis, Maurice Becker, Robert Minor, and Adolph Dehn. Articles, essays and poetry are by a list of names - almost every last one of which is in your encyclopedia - which reads like a Who's Who of American Socialism, with the occasional name from art, publishing, and variant walks of politics. That list, in this issue, is: Michael Gold; Robert Minor; Max Bedacht; Scott Nearing; Max Shachtman; Bertram D. Wolfe; Alexander Bittelman; Karl Radek; Floyd Dell; Upton Sinclair; N. Bryllion Fagin; C.E. Ruthenberg; McKnight Black; and Elsa Bloch. Inexpensively produced, but trenchant and destined to become enshrined in American political publishing history. Before this year of 1924 was out, The Liberator would be closing its doors, to be briefly replaced by the Workers Monthly. A very scarce piece of American political publishing history. Please review scans. l-Lng1. Bookseller Inventory # 001472

Book Description: Farrar & Rinehart, Inc., New York, 1944. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: very good +. Coye, Lee Brown (illustrator). First edition. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing (spine faded -- particularly at the spine head, fading to board edges, light wear with bottoms of lower board tips rubbed through), in a Very Good + spine-sunned dust jacket (spine ends a touch chipped -- but not affecting the spine lettering, short tear to the top of the front and rear panels, light wear, light soiling, tape reinforcements to the verso -- inside -- at the spine ends and at the two aforementioned spine tears), SIGNED BY AUGUST DERLETH on the front free endpaper and there entertainingly inscribed by him as follows: "for Cyrus B. Condra - / with the hope that he / may have a pleasantly / uneasy hour or two - // Cordially, // August Derleth [underscored]"; a collection of twenty Horror stories from masters of the genre selected and introduced by August Derleth. Each story is preceded by a page of information about its author and an illustration by Lee Brown Coye. While signed copies of books authored by Derleth abound, books signed by Derleth not principally authored by him do not. Copies of this book in the dust jacket are quite uncommon, copies signed by Derleth are scarce, and copies in the dust jacket signed by Derleth are, in our experience, absolute hen's teeth. A Very Good copy, SIGNED BY AUGUST DERLETH. QUITE SCARCE. Bookseller Inventory # 00004138
