Item Description: Chicago A.C. McClurg 1914, 1914. First Edition, First Binding without the acorn on the spine. In the very rare original 1914 dust jacket. This is the rarest state (for many years unrecorded) where in this copy the title page is a cancel (the title page is mounted on a stub where a leaf has been removed and replaced) with the correct Chicago - A.C. McClurg 1914 imprint on the title page and the printerÕs name appears in a single line in gothic type with the imprint on the copyright page. This version was unknown to Edgar Rice BurroughsÕs various bibliographers over the years Heins, Zeuschner, and only revealed in 2002 in the revised and corrected version of L.W. CurreyÕs Science Fiction and Fantasy Authors: A Bibliography of First Printings of Their Fiction and Selected Nonfiction, page 75 (only issued on CD rom). Currey describes the copy he discovered as ÒuniqueÓ, however, in recent years, several copies of this state have turned up, making it the rarest of the several states of the book. Since the title page is a cancel replacement by the publisher it might logically follow that his variant replacing another that it is implied that an early incorrect or somehow defective title page created by the printer. Rear hinge cracked, some aging to cloth, a very good copy in a very good original first edition dust jacket which has some restoration by an expert paper conservationist. The character of Tarzan has appeared in BurroughsÕs own sequels, movies, television, comic books, a successful comic strip and spin-off products. Burroughs was the first writer of fiction to shrewdly exploit his creation in a manner which is now considered business as usual. As a matter of fact, Tarzan was the first literary character to be registered as a trademark. He created his own publishing and marketing company, E.R.B. Inc., located in Tarzana, California. Item Description: Chicago: A.C. McClurg and Company, 1916. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Included. St. John, J. Allen (illustrator). 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Illustrated by J. Allen St. John. Bound in the publisher's green cloth, with gilt-stamped lettering to the front board and spine; in the extremely uncommon and completely unrestored first issue dust jacket. A fine copy, with minor wear to the spine ends, very light wear to the top corners, hint of rubbing to the rear board, bright and fresh interior; unclipped dust jacket, with chipping and some loss to the spine and the corners, rubbing and chipping at the folds, slight loss to the top edge of the front panel, light creasing across, bright and unfaded illustrations. Housed in a custom folding box. Beasts of Tarzan is the third novel in Burroughs' series of Tarzan adventure stories. At the start of the novel, Tarzan is living in England as the wealthy Lord Greystoke. After his wife and son are abducted, Tarzan returns to the wild to recover his family and unleash a vicious animal vengeance on the perpetrators. It is not Tarzan's social status or wealth that save his family, but rather his animal origins and ability to converse with the beasts of the jungle. Beasts of Tarzan was originally published serially in five installments in the All-Story Magazine from May through June, 1914. In addition to the color pictorial dust jacket, this volume contains a frontispiece and illustrated title piece by St. John as well as numerous black and white illustrations throughout the text. Item Description: Toronto: McCelland, Goodchild & Stewart, 1914., 1914. The Rarest Tarzan Edition of All An Astonishing Copy In the Scarce First State BindingBURROUGHS, Edgar Rice. Tarzan of the Apes. Toronto: McClelland, Goodchild & Stewart, 1914. True first Canadian edition, first printing (with canceled title), in the first state binding without acorn above the U.S. publisher's slug on spine, and the rarest of all editions; Burroughs's bibliographer, Robert B. Zeuschner, in an interview with us, estimates that were likely only 200-500 copies issued of this edition but Carl Spadoni, bibliographer of McClelland, Goodchild & Stewart, reports to us that the true number issued was probably no more than 250. Octavo (7 5/16 x 4 7/8 in; 185 x 124 mm). [2, blank], [8], 400, [1], [5, blank] pp. Title page illustration by Fred J. Arting.Publisher's original dark red cloth. Gilt lettering to upper board and spine. Gilt rules at spine head and tail. Blindstamped panel to upper board. An astonishing, completely untouched, tight, bright and fine copy of a phenomenally rare edition of the utmost scarcity with cancel title page and in first state binding. Housed in a quarter red morocco clamshell case. "The Queen Bee of Tarzan editions," according to Carl Spadoni's report to us, "extraordinarily scarce."OCLC/KVK locate only five copies worldwide: McMaster University, Toronto Public Library, University of Louisville, University of Wyoming, and Bibliothéque et Archives Canada. It is, however, unknown whether all five of these copies possess the canceled title page and are in the first state binding. ABPC reports no copies at auction within the last thirty-five years. On June 14, 1914, publisher A.C. McClurg of Chicago published the first edition in book form of Tarzan of the Apes (his writing published in contemporary pulp magazines, this was his first book) in a printing of 5,000 copies. Unanticipated demand, however, led McClurg to contract with another printer-binder for an additional 2,500 copies. Based upon Henry Heins' Golden Anniversary Bibliography of ERB (1964), for many years it was believed that an acorn above the publisher's name at the foot of the spine indicated the true first edition, first state. As Zeuschner notes, however, subsequent research (Fowler, The Case Against the Acorn, ERB - DOM #19), has firmly established that it was the adjunct printer-binder who added the acorn to the publisher's slug. Thus copies lacking the acorn are ascendant, and, as a result, Heins has revised his opinion. Subsequent printings by McClelland possess an integral title page or have the cancelled title page but are in the McClurg second state "acorn" binding.Spadoni and Donnelly 110. Cf. Zeuschner 696, note. Interview with Robert B. Zeuschner Dec. 28, 2007. Interview with Carl Spadoni, Ph.D, Jan. 2, 2008. Bookseller Inventory # 01179

Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 109. Bleiler (1978), p. 35. Reginald 02285. Heins JG-1. Light tanning to free endpapers with faint ghosting on front free endpaper from early owner's name and address inked at upper left corner of front free endpaper, touch of rubbing to cloth along bottom edges, and hint of sunning to spine panel, a very good copy in near fine dust jacket with light wear at spine ends, two corner tips and along top edge of rear panel, and light uniform dust soiling to spine panel. Book and jacket were married at sometime in the past, but not before the owner's name had ghosted on front free endpaper, an obvious impossibility if the book was always in its jacket. Still, an attractive, presentable copy of one of the more uncommon Burroughs first editions. (#113327). Bookseller Inventory # 113327
